Like attracts like. You may not want to believe this, but it is entirely true. Our hanging partners, sister-friends, and those we consider to be our besties resonate and respond with a soul quality in us that is very much like something within themselves. So it stands to reason that if you want to know more about yourself, you need only look at the folks you hang around, or those that want to hang around you. God has given us a way to correspond and commune with each other within this earthly realm, but it is more than the audible words that we speak. There is also a subconscious or soul communication that we’re speaking constantly, and this is the dialogue that will often attract or repel situations, people, and blessings.
Soul Communication is not one of those spooky New Age terms that takes us to the dark side. We should not allow ourselves to be tricked out of doing the work of our souls that God requires. He tells us over and over in His Word to deal with the faulty inner wiring that is working against us from the inside out. Not only does He command us to change our hearts, we need to do a checkup from the neck up on a consistent basis as well. He tells us to do these things to keep our souls in alignment with His Word and Will. God designed us to live from the inside out and not the outside in. Our bodies are our temples. They house our spirits and souls. The house should not govern the person that lives there; the person governs the house. Through our wills, our free-will choice, we are in the position to dictate what happens on the inside of us. Then, as we grow higher in Christ, the external will begin to follow the internal.
God has given us power and authority through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. With this power and authority, we are commanded to walk in the Spirit. This means that we operate through the internal/indwelling Spirit of Christ. All of the good stuff that we need to live a successful and peaceful existence comes from God, and He has placed this goodness within us through His Holy Spirit. So, it stands to reason that if we are not learning to tap into what the Father is doing on the inside of us, we’re missing out.
In John 16:13-15(The Message), Jesus Christ tells us, “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t handle them now. But when the Friend comes, the Spirit of the Truth, he will take you by the hand and guide you into all the truth there is. He won’t draw attention to himself, but will make sense out of what is about to happen and, indeed, out of all that I have done and said. He will honor me; he will take from me and deliver it to you. Everything the Father has is also mine. That is why I’ve said, ‘He takes from me and delivers to you.” Here in John 16:13-15, Jesus Christ has given us incredible insight regarding what we can expect from this tremendous gift that God has made available through him.
The indwelling Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth that Jesus Christ promised. He is our friend. This friend, the indwelling Holy Spirit, that is within you is on a mission, and that mission is to help you grow in your relationship with God through Jesus Christ. He, the spirit, will not draw attention to himself. (Hint: This gives us a valuable clue about how a true friend ought to operate.) The person of the Holy Spirit is interested in taking YOU higher in the Lord. He isn’t interested in garnering the limelight. Your walk of power, love, and light through Jesus Christ is center stage. The spirit makes sense out of what Jesus Christ has done and said. He teaches us, and he honors the Lord, Jesus Christ. This is a piece of knowledge that we can’t get twisted. He’s not honoring you and me. Again, the indwelling Holy Spirit honors Jesus Christ and the work that he has completed on our behalves.
We have a human spirit, and when we become born again, our human spirit comes alive to God. When this happens, God’s Holy Spirit testifies with our human spirit that we are God’s children. Romans 8:16(NLT) says, “For his Spirit joins with our spirit to affirm that we are God’s children.” This is magnificent! Through Christ, our human spirits are in complete harmony and obedience to God through His Holy Spirit, but what about our souls and bodies. Those two are under our free-will choice. So what do you think happens within us when our human spirit is honoring Christ, and our hearts, minds, souls and bodies are doing something completely different? Talk about mixed messages of epic proportion, here you have it. This kind of ambiguity and lack of mind-spirit-soul-body harmony brings chaos to our lives. It will dramatically diminish our faith.
Jesus Christ tells us something else that is really mind blowing. First, making it very clear that everything that the Father possesses also belongs to him, Jesus tells us that the spirit will take from him and deliver it to us. Jesus isn’t talking about a onetime shot here. He’s talking about a continuous IV dose of super charged treasure from him to us. This is administered through the indwelling Holy Spirit. He, the spirit that indwells us, is the deliverer of the Lord’s treasure. Did you comprehend that scrumptious piece of yummy truth? Chew on it a little bit. It’s good to the last drop. So the question is…are you blocking it? That’s the big daddy query that each of us must answer. And the truth is that too many of us are stopping the flow through our words, thoughts, attitudes, and ultimately our actions. Some of us are internally (and externally) communicating messages that are completely and diametrically opposed to the Word of the Lord that our indwelling Holy Spirit is transmitting.
There is absolutely and unequivocally no barriers on the part of Heavenly Father that would hinder Him from doing extraordinarily wonderful things for each of us. The barriers exist within our own souls, within our own hearts and minds. No matter how much we might try, we can’t run from this or try to hide it. Proverbs 4:23-27 (The Message) tells us, “Keep vigilant watch over your heart; that’s where life starts. Don’t talk out of both sides of your mouth; avoid careless banter, white lies, and gossip. Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Look neither right nor left; leave evil in the dust.” The heart is the feeling center of the soul. It’s the place where the love of God takes root. Heavenly Father warns us here in Proverbs 4:23-27 to keep a diligent watch over our hearts because whatever flows out of it will dramatically impact the course of our lives.
John 16:13 informs us that the indwelling Holy Spirit guides us into ALL truth. We also know from the mouth of Jesus Christ that only the truth can make us free. It must be first heard, secondly understood, and lastly it must be digested so that it feeds the soul in a supernatural way. God’s Holy Spirit is perfect, and so is our recreated human-spirit once are born again spiritually. The Holy Spirit doesn’t need to digest the Word because he IS the Word; for he is the essence of God. Our souls on the other hand must be changed as we work out our own soul salvation. We’re being led to truth; therefore, you and I can know definitively that the awareness of truth should be our number one goal. We should want to understand and learn about Christ so we can follow his example and live free. This is what God wants for us.
When it comes to the thing that we’ve been praying so earnestly to receive. We have to recognize that we’re on a journey towards receiving it, but this journey requires us to gain a greater awareness of the thing that is internally blocking our faith from full throttle. After our new birth reality, our identity is totally baptized and immersed in the person of Jesus Christ. The person that we used to be, the ‘old’ us, was corrupted by the world, but the new creation that has been birthed in us is the spitting image of Christ. Our identity in Christ is the real deal. It’s the truth. It’s who we are. To the extent that some yuckiness in our souls is prompting feelings, behaviors, and attitudes that go against our identity in Christ, this is a lie that will show up in your circumstances. It will manifest in your relationships. It will ooze out of your pores no matter how much you try to cover it up. It must be dealt with through prayer, repentance, and obedience to God’s Word.
Proverbs 28:13(NKJV) tells us, “He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy.” Again, we can’t hide anything, and nothing about our lives are coincidences. There is a reason for everything under the sun when it comes to your life and living. The collective truth of where we are in our faith is evidenced by the quality and substance of our lives. This we can always change through the power and guidance of the gift. We can get unblocked when we pray and ask Heavenly Father to reveal the truth to us through the Holy Spirit that indwells us. So if the communication of your soul and the watchfulness of your heart is not attracting the opportunities to be blessed that you greatly desire, know definitively that it’s time to change something within. ■
Prayer of Repentance
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank You for blessing me so wonderfully, for giving me life and allowing me to experience Your grace. I know that You have made Your Word available to me, but I haven’t studied Your Word as diligently as I should have. Please forgive me. I will do better, Lord. There is so much more I could have known, and because I haven’t diligently sought to know more about Your Word, I have not believed it properly in some areas of my life. I confess the sin of unbelief. I will not try and make excuses for it. I’m sorry for not being all that I could be, and I ask You to please forgive me and help me to be better. I acknowledge that in many ways I am ignorant of Your Word and Will, and I accept the responsibility for this. I confess this as a sin and repent of it. Please increase my understanding so that I can comprehend Your truth, and walk in Christ in a greater way. Please, Dear Father, remove the spirit of bitterness, vengeance, anger, insecurity, and doubt in my heart. I know that You have forgiven me, and because you’ve forgiven me, I forgive myself. I pray this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
