Proverbs 15:31-32 (NLT) “If you listen to constructive criticism, you will be at home among the wise. If you reject discipline, you only harm yourself; but if you listen to correction, you grow in understanding.”
If I had only captured this scripture and understood the full breadth of its meaning years ago, there’s no telling where I’d be in the Lord right now. Personally, I believe it’s possible to build a decent existence just off these two verses alone. They tell you everything you need in order to make the most out of life.
If we’re honest with ourselves, we’ll admit that the last thing we want to hear is constructive criticism, especially during those times that we have our heart and mind set on something. We’re so gung-ho that we can’t see the writing on the wall. As the elders would say, “the only way we’ll learn is if we take a hit upside the head a few times and get some sense knocked into us.” The old saying is pretty comical, but it also paints a picture of our lack of wisdom at times.
The Will of God is that we will all be at home with wisdom. This means that we need to be so well-versed in wisdom that it becomes a natural instinct. Wisdom comes from God and He will give it to us if we ask Him for it. He will work within us through the indwelling Holy Spirit, and soon we will experience an elevation of understanding. Details that we used to overlook, we will pick up. When it comes to scripture, we’ll connect the dots mentally and those razor sharp, light-bulb moments of enlightenment will increase.
Heavenly Father will strategically position people in our lives that will speak the truth to us. They will sometimes do this at times when we are less inclined to hear it. Sometimes we’re involved in relationships with the wrong people, but won’t admit it. Maybe we’re making financial decisions that will exhaust our resources, but we are so concerned with looking a certain way that we won’t use sound judgment. There are so many ways that we reject God’s discipline, and Proverbs 15:32 tells us that we only harm ourselves when we do this.
God tells us that if we will listen to correction, we will certainly be in a position to grow in understanding. Spiritual growth is one of God’s top priorities for His kids. He wants us to grow in His love, and to do this we need to listen to the truth, to study and embrace the wisdom of His Word, and to become increasingly pliable to His correction. Let’s make the choice to stay away from the path of destruction, and to travel down the road of wisdom and understanding by growing in God’s Word.
