Proverbs 18:14 (NLT), “The human spirit can endure a sick body, but who can bear a crushed spirit?”
If you wake up in the morning and all of a sudden you start to feel sick, you immediately do a mental self-examination to determine a reason why you’re feeling ill. You start asking questions like, “Did I eat something that didn’t agree with me? Is this thing viral? Was I around anyone that was sick?” If you deduce that it’s something that doesn’t require a doctor’s visit, more than likely, you can go to the nearest drug store for a quick remedy. Maybe it’s a day or so off from work, and you’re back to your normal self. Not so easy when your spirit takes a hit.
This verse in Proverbs 18:14 isn’t referring to the Holy Spirit that indwells us. He is perfect, and can never, ever be crushed. This verse is referring to our human spirit; that part of us that expresses our unique personality through emotions and thoughts. Proverbs 18:14 says that our human spirit can endure a sick body, because we know what to do for this, but it’s a completely different story when it comes to the soul of who we are.
A crushed spirit can leave you in bed for days on end. It can cause the most mature Christian to doubt the willingness of God to bless them. A crushed spirit requires you to get on your knees and cry out to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, to help you. You’ll need to lean on your closest friend, the Holy Ghost himself, to quicken you so that you don’t lose heart to whatever circumstance that has caused you to be in such despair.
I’ve witnessed many women lose all hope when their husbands abandoned their families. Parents that have lost their children are beyond devastated, and feel as though they will never get over it. People that are ruined financially sometimes feel as though they might never recover. There are many situations and circumstances in life that break our hearts and cause us to sink to the depths of emotional sadness and despair. Only God can repair a heart so broken and a spirit that is so severely crushed.
The Psalmist cried out to God in Psalm 51:10 (KJV), “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.” It is important for us to realize that Heavenly Father is willing and able to do this restorative work. He can give us a new heart, one where the pain of what we’ve lost is manageable. So when our human spirits takes a hit, when they are bruised in ways that we cannot see and require recalibration in order to gain hope again, there is a remedy. It is to trust that God will make our hearts new again, and that He will renew our human spirits by the power of the Holy Spirit that indwells us. This must be our prayer, as He helps us to bear a crushed spirit. ■
