A Helper That Is Just Right

In Genesis 2:18 (NLT), our Heavenly Father saw that Adam was alone in the Garden of Eden, and He said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.” So, God made Eve to meet Adam’s need for companionship. He intended for the man and the woman to move in such unity that they become one person – this is the reason why a man leaves his father and mother and is joined to his wife, because he and his wife are purposed by God to be united as one.

This can leave no doubt in our minds that marriage is a part of God’s plan for humanity. Some people make the huge mistake of thinking that women were made as an afterthought, that God didn’t think about the woman until He saw that Adam was lonely. This is not the truth. God is amazingly brilliant and all-knowing. Adam and Eve were one person before He split them into two people. He took from Adam’s body and made Eve, and the two were to exist in perfect harmony with each other and with Heavenly Father. This was always God’s intention.

The enemy has caused society to diminish partnership to such a degree that men no longer value what a woman is and does, and women devalue what a man is and does. We end up with marriages that end abruptly because we don’t know how to work together and help each other. We lack even the language to be able to communicate expectations, because we’re so afraid of being labeled chauvinistic, feminist, or old-fashioned.

God’s main objective is for us to be happy in companionship, and for us to have the support we need to grow strong families and commit to the ministry of reconciliation. Jesus Christ must be at the center of our relationships in order for this to happen.

One of the most important ways that we make him the center is to begin to honor what each person brings to the relationship. We need to recognize the help they provide with humility and gratitude, because spouses are truly a magnificent and loving way in which God provides for us. When we’re thankful to God for the help He provides through the other partner, we will see the Christ in them, and the word “Helper” will always mean that the love of God is shining brightly in our relationships.
