Thank You for Forgiving Us

Dear Heavenly Father,

There is so much to learn about being a Christian. As I grew to understand more about what You require of us, I must admit that at first, I was very confused. I heard a lot about the forgiveness that You offer, and it seemed to be a perpetual theme. In 1John 1:9 (NLT), Your Word says, “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”  I was very naïve when I read this verse, and thought to myself, “I’m not a wicked person, so this doesn’t apply to me.” I think a lot of people think this way, because they don’t know the wickedness that all sin represents.

You tell us in Romans 5:12(NLT), “When Adam sinned, sin entered the world. Adam’s sin brought death, so death spread to everyone, for everyone sinned.” Your laws teach us that for every action, there is a corresponding reaction. Everything has a price, and the wages of sin is death. If Jesus Christ had not rescued us from the kingdom of darkness, humanity would be doomed.

The start of all our trouble is sin. It is the act of believing or trusting anything over Your Word. Any time that we sin, we bow to the ruler of sin, which is the devil. This is what makes it such an offense to You and Your love.

We must be humbled enough to admit that we are not perfect, but we are being perfected through Jesus Christ daily. When we fall into sin, because of Christ, we can get back into fellowship and right standing with You by seeking Your forgiveness. We should always ask Your forgiveness for anything that we have said, thought, felt, or done against Your Will. Thank You for forgiving us, Heavenly Father!

When I was younger, I never really understood why we had to ask for forgiveness for the sinful things we thought about. In my mind, if no one knows what you’re thinking, then your thoughts can’t do any harm, but sin begins with a thought, and is often followed by an action. This is why we should always be on guard against it. Song lyrics, television shows, videos…the devil uses all of these to plant seeds of sin in our heads. Please help us, Heavenly Father, to be sharp mentally and spiritually, so that we can resist these sinful influences.

Colossians 1:13 (NLT) says, “For he has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of his dear Son.” Thank You for saving our souls, for rescuing us out of the hands of satan through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank You for Jesus, and thank You for the Holy Spirit. Please help us to be a blessing to Your Kingdom, and let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
