Recharging Our Batteries

Dear Heavenly Father,

In Genesis 2:2(NLT), You tell us, “On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work.”  Your Word also tells us that You are Spirit, therefore, You don’t need rest in the physical sense. We need rest for our physical bodies to continue to function, but Psalm 121:4 tells us that You never sleep or slumber. So the practice of resting takes on a deeper meaning than that of just sitting or lying. It is a state of bringing something to conclusion and fulfillment. You didn’t sit down because You needed to take a breather. You wanted us to know that when You do something, nothing else is left to do. You’ve done it the best that it could be done, and You rested because what You have completed is good.

In our relationship with You, we must know You as our Sovereign God—a God that is all-powerful, all-knowing, all-loving, and everywhere present. You’re magnificent in every way, and You never leave anything half done. There is none like You and no one can take credit for Your handy-work. If we forget that this is who You are, we will also forget who we are through You. We’ll become slack in our commitment to be all You’ve made us through Jesus Christ, and we will forget what You’ve called us to do.

The human mind is programmed by repetitive practice. We are inundated with negativity through social media and all the other stuff that comes at us daily. If we don’t make it a habit to teach our minds to be active in Your goodness, they might revert back to the way we used to think and behave before we came to Christ. This is why You tell us in Ephesians 4:23 to be renewed in the spirit of our minds. To renew is to change the way we think continually, so that our thoughts line up with the mind of Christ. It isn’t something we do one day and forget to do the next. Renewing the mind is a constant process we are required to engage.

Genesis 2:3 tells us that You blessed the seventh day and sanctified it. You set the Sabbath apart so that with the close of each week, we will remember all that You’ve done to create a beautiful habitation for Your people. You want us to continually remind ourselves of Your love for us and that You are a God who has no equal. You are our Holy Heavenly Father, and we are required to take the time to focus on Your goodness and rest in it.

Thank You for the wisdom of giving us a day to rest in Your goodness through the Lord Jesus Christ, to commune with You and rest our minds from everything else. You created our beings in such a way that rest is required. This shows us that it is important to You. No one can do for us what You do, Heavenly Father! Thank You for giving us the Sabbath to recharge our batteries as we make a habit of taking time to give You our entire focus in every way.

Thank You for our powerful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Thank You for the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit and thank You for Your matchless and perfect Word. Please let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ. Amen. ■
