Ecclesiastes 1:9-11(NLT)
“9 History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. 10 Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. 11 We don’t remember what happened in the past, and in future generations, no one will remember what we are doing now.”
Getting up every morning and doing the same thing can be quite mundane. For the single mom on the grind, we know the deal… preparing lunches, dropping off the kids at school, cooking dinner, grocery shopping, going to work…it seems like nothing changes from day to day. You start to think life seems full of tasks you just have to do over and over again. You’re being productive, doing meaningful and important things for your family, but personally, you feel a little left out of the equation. You’re not as fulfilled as you hoped you would be. How do you change this?
The Book of Ecclesiastes illustrates for us some practical observations by Solomon, King David’s son, who ruled Jerusalem for a period. Solomon is known as the wisest person that has ever lived, and he spent a good portion of his existence pursuing knowledge. He found in all of his study that this didn’t offer a great deal of satisfaction. In fact, he found it in many cases to be unsatisfactory, and complained about the endless cycle of daily life as being redundant and having very little purpose or meaning.
Solomon saw life this way because nothing seemed new to him. In effect, He proved God’s declaration in Psalm 75:6-7(NLT) where the Father tells us, “6 For no one on earth—from east or west, or even from the wilderness—should raise a defiant fist. 7 It is God alone who judges; he decides who will rise and who will fall.” Redundancy can become tiring, but with the proper mindset and heart, it can be the avenue to see a new dimension in our walk with the Lord Jesus Christ.
Verse 7 tells us that it is God who does the judging, He decides the who, what, when, and where of promotions. It is very important for us to understand that God values even the ordinary things of the world. Human beings are so accustomed to life moving at such a high speed. We have an attitude of wanting things to change fast. We want what we want when we want it, and we become bored very quickly. We must be aware that God sees and knows all, and our efforts to help, give, share, and show love are never in vain.
In Colossians 1:11, the Apostle Paul prayed that the people would be strengthened with God’s power so they will have endurance and patience to do what God requires. This should be our prayer as well, because prayer will help us transition out of an attitude of dissatisfaction.
No one will be stuck in neutral for long by following the way of Christ. We will continually climb higher, and this is why we also need to pray for vision. Proverbs 29:18(KJV) tells us, “Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.” As we continue to study and read God’s Word, through the Holy Spirit that indwells us, God will give us a revelation—a vision revealing an aspect of our futures that will continually motivate us, despite tiredness and boredom. It will help us keep our eyes locked on the prize.
One of the things I love so much about the Word of God is that it doesn’t change, and God doesn’t change. Heavenly Father is the same yesterday, today and forever. Living His Word will always and forever help us to break out of a mundane mind-and-heart-set, because living His Word will help us see the Father’s vision for our lives. This is what Solomon realized when He said in Ecclesiastes 12:13(NLT), “That’s the whole story. Here now is my final conclusion: Fear God and obey his commands, for this is everyone’s duty.” Solomon recognized that true fulfillment comes from serving God. The Lord thanks us in the most rewarding ways, and as we continue to be obedient to His Word, we can be excited and greet each new day with an attitude of “I get to do it all over again!”■
