John 16:13-15(NLT)
13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. 14 He will bring me glory by telling you whatever he receives from me. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine; this is why I said, ‘The Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me.’
There’s an old saying that tells us, “When you know better, you do better.” This is a very true statement, and our powerful Heavenly Father backs it up in Proverbs 4:7, where He tells us that wisdom is the principal thing, and therefore we must get wisdom; we must also get understanding. God’s Word is the source of all wisdom and right knowledge. It’s an astounding thing, but even after He has told us the importance of obtaining wisdom and the right information, many people still underestimate how vital this is to life in the Spirit.
John 16:13 tells us that the Holy Spirit will guide us into ALL truth, but this doesn’t mean that you and I don’t have to open the book. The beginning step to being guided is to open up God’s Word. It is the step that engages the Spirit’s help as we read and study. He will work on the inside as we use the facilities of our thoughts and emotions to comprehend the truth.
The Holy Spirit is our guide, and we desperately need his guidance. In Ephesians 6:17, God tells us to take the helmet of salvation, and to also take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Spirit’s sword. The Word is spiritual weaponry. You and I do not have to fight the devil. The Spirit will do the hard work; he’s the one with the sword. Our responsibility is to do as 1Peter 5:9 commands, which is to stand firm and be strong in our faith.
You and I couldn’t possibly know the future, but our Lord and Savior knows all about it. In John 16:13, he gives us a visual of the communication system between the Throne of Heaven and us here below. The Holy Spirit receives information about our futures from Jesus Christ, and he relays this information to us internally. Jesus tells us in John 16:15 that the Spirit tells us whatever he receives from him. Without this information, you and I can’t fully walk in the purpose for which we were created. We can’t truly know God’s specific plan for us without being guided by the Spirit who abides within.
The right information is a very powerful tool, but we must know how to receive it, what to do with it, and when to it put it in action. We live in a society where information is literally at our fingertips. You don’t even have to leave your front door if you don’t want to. Most of us can access the Word of God at any time of the day. So many of us are waiting on God to move, when the greatest resource of His Kingdom is living on the inside of us. Let’s be committed to read and study God’s Word more and more. We will be guided in ways that will amaze us, and the Spirit will give us a depth of understanding that help us achieve meaningful spiritual growth in the Lord Jesus Christ.
