Revelations 3:7-8(NLT)
“This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open. 8 “I know all the things you do, and I have opened a door for you that no one can close.””
For many born-again believers today, their spiritual condition is kind of shaky. Mainly, this is because there’s so much uncertainty all around us. Folks that have professed to love the Lord are now starting to doubt His love all together. Things feel very unsteady, and all the systems and institutions that we’ve counted on in the past are breaking down, and this includes the people running those things. On top of this, many single people have been waiting so long to meet a quality individual that their zeal and faith is beginning to dwindle.
We cannot behave as if the world is a solid foundation. God told us in His Word exactly what we can expect. Ephesians 6:12(NLT) says, “For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.” In order to stand firm in the spiritual warfare on earth, God tells us to put on every spiritual weapon He has provided. He then tells us in 1John 4:4(NLT), “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.”
God looks for the hearts and minds of His children to be consistent and unwavering. We often think we can wait to develop this kind of spiritual endurance, but we can’t. If we haven’t demonstrated spiritual tenacity regarding the strength of our own hearts and minds, how will we stand strong when it comes to the warfare of protecting our union with a future spouse.
James 1:6(NLT) says, “But when you ask him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind.” Some of us have a divided loyalty, because we’re looking to the world for happiness. God is our Sufficiency. Our faith and trust must be in Him, and Him alone. God knows when our hearts are truly prioritizing our relationship with Him in the number one spot. There’s no faking this.
As believers, we must realize that the devil is going to test us in the area of our heart’s desire. In the Book of Job in the Old Testament, Job had to prove that his allegiance to God was not out of a desire to have more goodies. He had to prove that he wasn’t making all those offerings and sacrifices to God simply so God would do favors for him and bless his children. Our whole life experience is about our relationship with God. It’s the relationship He’s after. Just as Job’s relationship with God had to be based on truth and faith, not on fear; It is the same with us.
Revelations 3:7 tells us that the Lord Jesus Christ has the key. We keep looking for the key everywhere else, and that’s why we can’t get through the door. Jesus Christ is the door, and the key is our faith in him; not the world, not the dating site, not the man. Our faith must be firmly anchored in Jesus. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open. Yes, we grow weary from the wait sometimes, and it may be taking longer than we would like to meet our future spouses, but God never fails. He delivers on all His promises, but we must be faithful. We must stand steadfast and immovable on His Word. We can’t behave, think or talk like the world. We must show ourselves strong in the faith, being confident that Heavenly Father will reward our diligence and unwavering commitment to Him. ■
