Dear Heavenly Father,
I’ve been thinking about this word consistency. It is defined as conforming to the application of something with steadiness, regularity, and stability. When I think about this word, I am reminded of what You told us in 2Timothy 1:7, that You didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but You’ve given us a spirit of power, love, and sound mind or sound judgement. Because of Your Son, Jesus Christ, we have the ability to make decisions and choices that are aligned with the wisdom of Your Word. We can be consistent in our actions, and therefore, we can expect that the consequences of those actions will be pleasing to You and pleasing to us as well.
We should never take this consistency of effort, thought, and feeling that You’ve given us through Christ for granted. It makes the foundation on which we live our lives very solid, and this is what You desire for every believer. You tell us in James 1:8 that a double-minded person is unstable in all their ways. A double-minded person is someone that vacillates constantly in their decisions and commitments. It is very hard to place any degree of trust in what they say, because they cannot be relied upon to keep their word. So, we can see very clearly that inconsistency is something we don’t want to see in ourselves or the person we’d like to partner with one day.
Every reliable institution and system make consistency a requirement. For instance, those of us who work for a living have an expectation that when we arrive on our jobs, we will know exactly what to do. Our jobs, for the most part, are consistent. We work each week and never question whether we’ll receive our direct deposits or checks. We place our confidence in the companies we work for because they demonstrate consistency. We are confident they will compensate us on a consistent basis for the work we do.
It’s not hard to see that we not only desire consistency from our relationships and jobs, but we depend on it to make our lives work. So, if we want consistency, we should know that You desire the same thing. You want us to stop being hot for You one day and cold the next. You want us to get to a place where we have faith in You when things are good and have even greater faith in You when things are difficult. We should be consistent in our faith and not abandon our commitment to You and Your Kingdom when situations are challenging.
Children, in their young ages, have short attention spans and find it sometimes difficult to stay on task, but we can’t be this way as spiritually mature adults. We can’t say to You, “Ok God, this week I’m going to be on fire for You! I’m going to make sure I pray every day, tithe my paycheck, and be a greater blessing to Your Kingdom…”, then the very next week we don’t do any of those things. We don’t have to take care of our Kingdom responsibilities and duties by ourselves, because we can’t. Jesus Christ tells us in Matthew 6:33 to seek Your Kingdom and Your righteousness before we seek any other thing. If we will pray and seek Your guidance, You will help us to be consistent and keep our commitment to You.
Please help us to recognize that we need to seek You more so that we learn to be diligent, for Hebrews 11:6 tells us that You reward diligent effort. Thank You for helping us to be consistent in our commitment to Your Kingdom. We don’t have to always get it right, but our minds and hearts should be committed to offer You our very best. Thank You for our powerful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and for Your precious Holy Spirit. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
