My daughter was talking to me the other day about a woman she met at work. The woman is new to the job and my daughter had to train her. They clicked right from the start. My daughter thinks her new co-worker is a quick learner, attractive, and very easy to talk to. They spoke quite candidly, and her new colleague shared that she’s 51 years old and has never been married or had any children. When asked if she’d ever wanted to have a family, she told my daughter that it had always been her desire, but the opportunity didn’t present itself. She’s now in a relationship, and it’s the first one’s she’s ever had. My daughter was shocked by this.
Marriage and having a family isn’t for everyone, and you don’t have to be married or have children to have a meaningful and fulfilling existence. However, if being married and having a family is your desire, it is important to understand the Will of God in this area. Psalm 84:11(NLT) says, “For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” Our Heavenly Father isn’t in the business of withholding blessings. It’s important to our faith that we have right believing in this area. We must be firmly grounded in the truth that God doesn’t withhold blessings from those who love Him and desire to please Him.
Getting married and/or having a family is a very good thing. God moves His plan and agenda for the earth forward through families. When we are committed to teach our future children His Word, and to minister to our spouses with a heart of Christ, God will reward our commitment to walk in love this way. Many people don’t know this piece of truth. They don’t understand the importance of continuing the legacy of the love of Christ in the earth and how meaningful it is to God that we do this. Our commitment to the things of God is a treasure that gets stored in heaven. When we sow good seeds and continue to please Him, He will reward us with a harvest in the season He appoints.
When my daughter told me about this woman, I thought about the sick man that was waiting by the pool of Bethesda in John 5. He had been ill for a very long time, and when Jesus Christ asked him “would you like to get well?” His answer was shocking. One would think that he’d immediately shout out a resounding “YES!!!”, but he didn’t. Instead, he said in John 5:7(NLT), “I can’t, sir…for I have no one to put me into the pool when the water bubbles up. Someone else always gets there ahead of me.” This sick man knew the ‘why’ of his dilemma but didn’t recognize that the answer to it was at his fingertips. He had become so accustomed to waiting to get in the pool that waiting had become his answer, and not the miracle working power of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Many single women feel as though they’ve been waiting by the pool for a long time. They have lost faith that they will ever see the dream in their hearts come true, but God is faithful to His Word, and He doesn’t withhold our blessings. The sick man was waiting on someone to put him in the pool, and in many ways, we are waiting for someone to put us in it as well. We see the pool as the solution, when forever and always, Jesus Christ is the answer. There is no problem that he won’t fix, no blessing he won’t bless us with when our faith is in God and our commitment is to please Heavenly Father with our whole lives. The wholeness that Christ makes available is what we need most. When we ask for that first, he’ll give us the faith to believe for the marriage he desires us to have.■
