The wisdom of Ecclesiastes 6:10(NLT) tells us, “Everything has already been decided. It was known long ago what each person would be. So there’s no use arguing with God about your destiny.” We will do very well in life if we allow this verse to sink into the depths of our minds and hearts. A great deal of our time is spent trying to decide our own destinies, but God’s Word in Ecclesiastes 6:10 very clearly tells us that Heavenly Father has already decided where our path will take us. Everything that happens here in the earthly realm has already happened in the spiritual realm. Nothing is a surprise to God, because He knows what we’re going to do before we even decide to do it.
Everything that has happened in the past, everything that is happening now, and everything that will happen in our lives in the future is already etched in stone. There is no changing it. Heavenly Father is not pulling our strings like puppets as we move about our lives, but there are no surprises about the decisions and choices we make. He allows us to make sinful and poor choices, just as He did with Adam and Eve. His Word says that even before Adam and Eve sinned against Him, Heavenly Father already had a plan of redemption in place. Before He laid the foundation of the world, He already knew that humans would sin, and that we would desperately need His help. Long before we existed in the flesh, He prepared the plan of salvation as a way for us to be reconciled to Him through Jesus Christ. 1Peter 1:19-20(NLT), says, “19 It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. 20 God chose him as your ransom long before the world began, but he has now revealed him to you in these last days.”
With every move we make, whether we realize it or not, we are affirming the brilliance of God’s intellect, the infallible quality of His nature, the incomparable power of His love, the overwhelming generosity of His mercy, the perfection of His grace, and the deservedness of all the glory, adoration, and honor we can bestow on Him. Our false moves do not trouble God’s Will or prevent it from going forth in the least. It is only ourselves we injure when we step outside His Will and do those things that do not bring Him glory. His mercy and grace abound towards us when we behave unwisely, but for our own sake, we need to get to a point where we work with God’s plan rather than against it. He wants the best for us, and by following His Word, we can have all that He has planned for us to receive.
Blessings beautifully unfold when we follow His Word, because His Word is His Plan. He can bless us in the present time with rewards because He knows whether we are going to remain committed to follow His statutes in the future. This is what it means when people say, “He reaches into the laid up treasures of future blessings and blesses our ‘right now!’” This gives the teaching of Jesus Christ in Matthew 6:19-20(NLT) greater depth. He taught us, “19 Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal.” This lets us know beyond a shadow of doubt that the choices we make today are impacting our tomorrows. We need to be extremely serious about the practice of storing up treasures, because it greatly blesses our futures.
Isaiah 40:31(NKJV) tells us, “But those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.” God promises our victory if we wait on Him, but some of us are in such hurry that we try to control things. We doubt God’s faithfulness, and we want to be able to add and subtract blessings to our lives on our own timetable. We fear change and growth, and don’t want the discomfort they sometimes bring. Jesus Christ has taught us that to whom much is given much is required. God is giving us the time we need to tighten our commitment to Him, and this means that we must focus on our relationship with Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ.
There’s no need for us to try to control the trajectory of our lives. When we are in the Lord Jesus Christ, God takes care of all that. Our responsibility is to pray often and listen to His direction so that we don’t put ourselves in troublesome situations. God tells us in Romans 12:2 what we must do to live a life that is pleasing to Him and fulfilling and meaningful to us as well. He tells us not to copy the behaviors and customs of the world, but to let Him transform us into the person He desires us to be. He will do this as we study His Word and line up our thoughts with the thoughts of Jesus Christ. This is how we remain inside the Father’s Will and capture the destiny He set for us long ago. ■
