In Deuteronomy 11:26-28(NLT), through Moses, God told His people living in Old Testament times, “26 Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! 27 You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the LORD your God that I am giving you today. 28 But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the LORD your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.” Today, we are living under a new covenant that has been ushered in by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Through him, we have received new life because of the gift of salvation he made available. We can’t take any credit for what God has accomplished through Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8 tells us that our salvation is indeed a gift from Heavenly Father, and He has done it all because of His amazing grace! He’s rescued us! We can bask in the protection and blessings of God’s love because He’s delivered us from the curse that Deuteronomy 11:26-28 talks about! He tells us in Galatians 5:1 that since He has delivered us from the vicious curse of sin, we should never again allow anyone to put that harness of slavery back on us.
The problem is that although most of us realize we have been redeemed from the curse of the law and sin through Jesus Christ, we still place ourselves back under this curse. We do it by behaving, thinking, speaking, and acting as we did before the love of Christ came into our hearts. As God’s beloved called-out ones, there should be a marked difference in how we conduct ourselves, because God has set us apart and made us holy for His very special purpose. What we do moment to moment matters greatly, and we must come into consciousness about the decisions and choices that lead to the kind of curse God warns us about.
Being unconscious about our sin and wrong behavior is what the Bible refers to as being blinded by satan. 2Corinthians 4:4(NLT) tells us, “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.” When our minds are blind, we don’t have an awareness of how our actions are impacting our lives. We blame everything else, but as children of light, we must connect the dots between our behavior and the consequences that come our way. There are some thoughts, some ways of speaking, some ways of acting, and some ways of being that are so entrenched that we don’t even think about them. We have to change this.
A generational curse is one that the devil lands upon families and bloodlines because they refuse to recognize their offense to God’s Word and Will and have never repented for it. Horrible sins were committed in our ancestral bloodlines, and that blood runs through our veins. We’re born into a world of sin with sin in our bodies. It’s the unfinished business of wickedness, yet those of us that are living today, and are also saved and washed by the blood of the lamb, have not done our due diligence. We should have an increased sense of duty to God. We should have a greater humility towards Him than those before us, and therefore, we should see it as the highest honor and privilege to repent and seek His forgiveness on behalf of those that came before us. They could have done better by God. They could have had a closer walk with Him, but either because of ignorance, hardness, or the love of sin, they did not do better. We should not allow this to be said of us.
God said in Exodus 34:7(NLT), “I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But I do not excuse the guilty. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children and grandchildren; the entire family is affected— even children in the third and fourth generations.” Most of us will read this verse but won’t allow the heft of its truth to resonate with us. We think, “Oh, that’s the Old Testament, that’s not happening today.” Sin is still sin. It is as greater curse as it ever was, and if you don’t believe it, look at the condition of the world today. God tells us in Malachi 3:6 that we had better recognize who He is. He’s God and He does not change! Obedience to His Word is required of us, and the humility to repent of our sins, especially those passed down to us from generations, is a must.
These sins are a heavy weight on our families, and we can see the impact as social ills grip those we love so much. Addiction, adultery, depression, anger, jealousy, obsession, domestic violence and abuse, molestation, sexual dysfunction…these can all be linked to generational curses. When you understand and come into consciousness about this, you can plead the blood of Jesus Christ and repent.
Repentance must be done. We’ve received the authority of Jesus Christ to remove blockers of darkness, and when we repent, we bind the demon that has been chastising us and those we love for generations. This allows the love of God to expand in what used to be the occupancy of a familiar spirit. Our goal as God’s children should always be to please Him and to honor God with our whole lives. As we study His Word and put on more knowledge and understanding of who Heavenly Father is, and who we are through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, God will reveal things to us that we don’t yet understand. It’s our job to seek the Lord continually. When we commit to the continual unfinished business of repentance, God will reward us and we’ll be elevated in His love and light.■
