As women who have been praying a while to meet the man we’re going to marry, we expect God to not only comply with our timetable, but to send us a man that perfectly fits our criteria. Some of us have fined tuned our lists to include the height, skin-tone, body-build, job, and financial status we’d like. Whether we write them down or have a mental list of prerequisites, we like what we like, and we can’t imagine liking something different. Whether we know it or not, our preferences regarding what we want in a man are not always aligned with what God knows we need. For many women, this is a hard pill to swallow.
The degree to which God wants to be involved in our lives is immeasurable. He’s given us the sacrifice of His only begotten Son to save us from darkness and damnation, and He’s given us His seed, the gift of the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. He tells us in 1Corinthians 6:19-20(NLT), “your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself.” God lives in us through His Spirit, and this means He is ever so close, and He wants to be involved in our everyday choices and decisions.
We don’t belong to ourselves. We’re on this earth because of God’s plan and purpose, and no matter how confident we feel within ourselves; we desperately need God’s guidance and direction. We make our lists based on what we think will make secure as women, but we must surrender to the truth that God is our security, and our trust must be in Him alone. For some of us, this is what the wait is all about. We’re praying to God for our will to be done, and not for His Will to be done in our lives.
We must consider that the kind of man we’ve always wanted might turn out to be someone that is the exact opposite of a blessing. Very often, our discernment isn’t based on the wisdom of God. Look at a situation involving His prophet, Samuel, for instance. In the Old Testament, God told Samuel to choose another king for His people, the king that God, Himself, had appointed. Samuel set out to do this, but he initially chose a man who aesthetically looked the part of a king, but his heart wasn’t right. In 1Samuel 16:7(NLT), God told Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” A man that doesn’t have the kind of heart that pleases God isn’t going to be right for you. It’s just that simple.
God desires us to have a good and peaceful marriage more than we could ever desire it for ourselves. He doesn’t want us falling for the devil’s decoys. He wants us to be wise in the wisdom of His Word, and He wants us to allow Him to guide us into the right choices for our lives. Our Heavenly Father never makes mistakes; not ever. Marriage requires us to have faith in the reality that God knows what is best for us. Therefore, we must be praying now for the humility to line up our hearts and minds with God’s Will. We must learn to be content with God’s blessings, and that includes the man that He will bring into our lives.
1Timothy 6:6-7(ESV) says, “6 But godliness with contentment is great gain, 7 for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world.” Your level of Godliness is God’s priority. He wants you to grow in Christ as much as possible through this earth experience. You must have faith in God’s Will for you and learn to be content with it, because again, He only does what is best for our lives. Don’t wait any longer. Now is the time to come before Him in humility regarding your future marriage. Take your hands off it. Let go and let God, and do it now.■
