One Sunday afternoon after church, René decided to eat out for lunch. She went to one of her favorite restaurants, and a man was in line waiting in front of her. He happened to be ordering the same thing that she was going to order, and when he stepped to the side and she stepped up to order, she said, “I’ll have the same thing.” Patiently waiting for his order five feet away, he heard her and paid for her order as well. As he was leaving, he said to her, “You’re all set. No need to bring out your wallet.” Stunned and beyond grateful she said, “God bless you sir, thank you so very much.” René recognized that this was a blessing from the Lord, so she paid it forward. She paid for the customer behind her. As she left the restaurant, the man that paid for her lunch was standing in the parking lot talking to a friend. René went up to him and thanked him again. He said to her, “I can tell you’re a Christian woman, and I knew doing something nice for you was the thing to do.”
As Christians, things like this shouldn’t slip by us. It’s a kiss from Heavenly Father, letting us know that He is well pleased with us. There’s no greater feeling than this! It’s a true confidence booster that we’re on the right track and being on the right track with our Heavenly Father is what it’s all about. René was in the right place at the right time, and what happened to her lets us know that God is always watching. She didn’t have to broadcast her faith in Christ. His light in her was undeniable. It was so bright and illuminating that a stranger was moved by the Holy Spirit to bless her in a way she wasn’t expecting.
Ephesians 5:2 (NLT) tells us to “Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ. He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.” René lives her life according to the love of Christ. She’s attentive to carry herself that way even when no one is looking. This is how others should perceive every child of God. We ought to be leaving a legacy of God’s love everywhere we go.
Jesus Christ commanded us in Matthew 5:15-16(NLT), “15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” We must never underestimate the power of Christ within us. His light allows us to do great things in the earth. His light empowers us to be a blessing and to receive a blessing as well. We need to know that as believers and followers of our Lord and Savior, we can change the entire trajectory of someone’s life just by being in their presence.
Psalm 27:1(ESV) says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” God’s light gives us strength, and it will impact every area of our lives. Many believers are allowing the troubles of life to bring them to the depths of despair. They are extremely sad, because they are not drawing strength from God’s light. In John 1:5(ESV), Jesus declared, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” This is the truth that must be anchored in our hearts. We ought to have this verse on repeat in our minds because it affirms the power of Christ that is within us. Although we may feel as though a dark cloud surrounds our lives, the darkness cannot overtake the light of Christ when we hold firmly to it in faith.
Ephesians 5:14 tells us that the light makes everything visible! This is what we do as believers in Christ! Ephesians 5:8-11(NLT) says, “8 For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light! 9 For this light within you produces only what is good and right and true. 10 Carefully determine what pleases the Lord. 11 Take no part in the worthless deeds of evil and darkness; instead, expose them.” Sometimes, we close ourselves off from others, and remain hidden. God has pumped us full of good stuff, but we don’t allow anyone to see it. Light doesn’t behave that way. It’s not ashamed or fearful, but effervescent and illuminating. This is within all of us who know Christ and are called according to God’s purpose.
2Corinthians 4:4 tells us that satan blinds the hearts of those who don’t believe in Christ, but that’s not us. 2Corinthains 4:6(NLT) says, “For God, who said, “Let there be light in the darkness,” has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.” If light did nothing—if it refused to shine, it would be darkness. But light would never, ever refuse to shine, because shinning is its nature, just as shinning is our nature because of Christ. This is what our Heavenly Father wants us to know. We have His light through Jesus Christ, and the light of Christ is undeniable, because we are born again of God’s Spirit. If you are unsure of what you carry as a believer, pray and study God’s Word so you can let the light of Christ shine brighter and receive those little kisses from Him like René.■
