Wait for God’s Help

Some years ago, I wrote a promise to the Lord – a covenant. I tucked it away and completely forgot where I put it. I also forgot to keep the covenant I made as well. I wrote it during some of the most challenging times of being a single woman. My heart was very full of doubt and uncertainty about meeting the one God has ordained to walk with me through life. I also didn’t understand what I wanted and needed in a spouse.

Isaiah 30:18 (NLT) tells us, “So the Lord must wait for you to come to Him so He can show you His love and compassion.  For the Lord is a faithful God.  Blessed are those who wait for his help.” When I wrote my promise to God, I worked with people that were either married or in a serious relationship. I felt isolated and sometimes ashamed, like I was on an island alone because I was single with seemingly no prospects. As time progressed, it felt like there was no rescue in sight, so I forgot about my promise because I forgot the faith and endurance required to see it come to pass.

God was waiting on me to get out of my own way—to put my feelings of shame, loneliness, and isolation away all together and cling to Him and His promises. He tells us in Isaiah 41:10(NLT), Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” When our desire to be married seems delayed, we often allow our emotions to get away from us, like I did. Our Heavenly Father knows that staying in this position for too long—where we let our emotions dictate our lives—will cause us to be distracted, and this will prevent us from walking by faith. During that time in my life, my focus was completely on my singleness and the lack of a significant person in my life. God rerouted me as I deepened my commitment to pursue Him, and this was the best thing that could have ever happened to me.

Some of you may be in this place today. You might be consumed with disappointment and discouragement because you don’t have a partner. Remember that God’s eyes are never turned away from us. He knows every detail of our lives because we belong to Him. Even though you may be feeling overwhelmed at the thought of spending another season or holiday without a significant person in your life, know that God has not forgotten you.

Psalm 84:11(NLT) says, “For the Lord God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory.  The Lord will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” Trust in the goodness of God with all your heart. We don’t always do what is right, and we’re not perfect, but God is perfect beyond perfection. He’s good and righteous in every way, and we should be committed to show Him that we know this is true, and we’re thankful for it every day of our lives. Begin to change your thoughts, confessions, and conversations so that they please our Heavenly Father and bring Him glory. Your desires will come to pass as you are committed to wait patiently on God. He has all power in His hands, and He will help your dreams became your reality. He is delighted to do this for you, so keep the faith! ■
