When our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, walked the earth and carried out God’s mission, he always spoke, taught, and lived the truth. Not once did he ever deviate from God’s truth, and he made his absolute allegiance to God’s truth plain to us in John 6:38(NKJV), when he declared, “For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me.” God’s Will is God’s Word! We can only know His Will by knowing His Word. We can only seek God’s Will by seeking His Word, and we can only follow God’s Will by following God’s Word. When we understand these great truths, we can position ourselves to please our Heavenly Father, root out confusion, and have confidence that we are understanding and living according to God’s Will and Word.
God wants everyone to be saved! That is His Will! We know this because 1Timothy 2:4-6(NLT) tells us that He “wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. 5 For there is only one God and one Mediator who can reconcile God and humanity—the man Christ Jesus. 6 He gave his life to purchase freedom for everyone. This is the message God gave to the world at just the right time.” If God had not told us in His Word that we could be saved through Jesus Christ, we would not know that this is available. If He had not told us in His Word how to be saved, then we would not know the path to it, but all thanks and praise to God that He did reveal this treasure to us in His Word. Romans 10:9 tells us that when we confess with our mouths that Jesus Christ is Lord, and we believe in our hearts that God raised him from the dead, we are saved! Those of us that have done this are saved today because we trusted in the life that is in the Gospel. Because of this, we will not perish but have received salvation, the gift of eternal life.
In John 15:5-7,16(NLT), Jesus Christ taught the disciples, “5 Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned. 7 But if you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask for anything you want, and it will be granted! 16 You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. 17 This is my command: Love each other.”
In a general sense, a lord is someone that is appointed with tremendous responsibility because they have demonstrated an aptitude and discipline to do things so well that no detail is left undone or attended to. Lordship is a superior distinction given to those that have demonstrated power, authority, and influence in a superior way. The royalty and majesty of the Lordship of Jesus Christ is beyond superior. He proved it through his life and sacrifice. Philippians 2:9-11(NLT) tells us, “9 Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Jesus Christ is Lord! He is the Leader, and we are the followers. When we give our lives to him and receive the salvation that he offers, we make a commitment to follow him in all that we do and with all that we are, from now until eternity. 1Corinthians 10:26(NLT) declares, “For “the earth is the LORD’s, and everything in it.”” It is both our privilege and responsibility to acknowledge this truth, but the reality is that most have not and will not. They will not relinquish and surrender their will for the Will of God.
Their will is to be led by their flesh and to seek what the flesh wants. God’s Will is that we are led by His Holy Spirit and that we seek His Will in all that we do. God tells us in Ephesians 4 that His Will is that we stop telling lies and cease to allow anger to control us. His Will is that if we are stealing, we steal no more. His Will is that we stop using abusive and foul language and that we let everything we do be good and helpful. He tells us in Ephesians 4:31-32(NLT), “31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words, and slander, as well as all types of evil behavior. 32 Instead, be kind to each other, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God through Christ has forgiven you.”
Our will versus God’s Will is the war that is waging in the minds, hearts, and souls of many, even those of us that have been on this Christian journey a long while. We need to understand that our agendas will not win; only God’s Will prevails. When our behavior, attitudes, actions, thoughts, and confessions are opposite of God’s Will for our lives, we’re out of order and outside the path of His blessings. Let’s not try to force square pegs into round holes. That will never work. It will only yield confusion and frustration. Get into God’s Word so that you will know God’s Will for your life. Begin to align your behavior, attitudes, actions, thoughts, and confessions with the example of Christ. This is God’s Will for you, and when you seek it with all your heart, you will live a life that is pleasing to Him and to you as well. ■
