The Biblical record of Eve in the Garden of Eden isn’t just a cautionary lesson about temptation, but it also serves as a reminder of the influence of women and how we can use it to change the lives of others. Imagine this: Eve, living in paradise with everything she could ever need, including the Word of our extraordinary and sovereign God. He warned her and Adam, as recorded in Genesis 2:16-17 (NLT): “You may freely eat the fruit of every tree in the garden—except the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you eat its fruit, you are sure to die.” But temptation, presented by satan in the form of a persuasive serpent, got the best of Eve. She took a bite of the forbidden fruit, and persuaded her husband, Adam, to do the same. Everything changed with this one bite.
Eve’s choice to disobey our Heavenly Father was horrendous, but satan’s target was Adam, because tricking Adam into sin, the enemy thought, was the way to disrupt God’s plan for humanity. This Biblical account shows us that temptation is a part of our human experience, and it can show up on the scene in a flash, appealing to our desires for material gain, relationships, and pleasure.
As children of God, filled with His Spirit and guided by His Word and the example of Christ, we have the distinct privilege and responsibility to reject the sinful actions of Adam and Eve, understanding that their actions brought about a separation from God’s perfect plan. Specifically, as women of faith, it is crucial to distance ourselves from Eve’s disobedience, and to try with full conviction to never follow her footsteps of succumbing to the tricks and temptations of satan.
The temptation
The temptation employed by the devil to deceive Adam and Eve remains prevalent today. It is to plant the notion in our minds and hearts that God is withholding something good from our lives. Psalm 84:11(NLT) declares: “For the LORD God is our sun and our shield. He gives us grace and glory. The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right.” God is not in the business of withholding blessings. We withhold them from ourselves when we fall prey to the allure of something forbidden and choose paths that are not aligned with His Word.
Tempted by satan in the form of a serpent, Eve succumbed to curiosity and desire, consuming the forbidden fruit. She caused her husband, Adam, to sin, and doing so initiated humanity’s fall from grace. Her disobedience emphasizes that recognizing and resisting temptation requires persistence, self-awareness, and most importantly, a fully persuaded commitment to the knowledge and wisdom of God’s Word. He requires us to have the patience, endurance, and persistence to pause and reflect on the potential ramifications of our actions. In other words, the impulse to make hasty choices must be placed in check.
The importance of our personal responsibility
Women living thousands of years ago, in Old Testament times, and those of us living today, all have a commonality, and it is our potential to influence those around us towards the goodness of our God and His Kingdom. When Eve gave into temptation, the consequences were enormous, but she had to face them. And when we make the wrong choices and decisions, we must do the same as well. Her life and costly mistake as recorded in God’s Word teaches us about personal responsibility.
Our choices not only affect us but also those around us. Some of us have wrong believing and habit patterns that will negatively influence our future husbands and families. We need to submit to God in a greater way and ask Him to teach us the lessons of Godliness in the areas where we’re lacking. Surrendering to God in this way, taking ownership of our actions and learning from our mistakes, helps us spiritually grow and become increasingly more like our precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Our modern times are marked by rapid technological advancement and conveniences, with increasing connections and interactions on a global scale. This fast-paced world is filled with constant distractions and pressures, but as women of God, we can’t afford to lose sight of what really matters. God is always about the business of moving us to repentance. By remembering Eve’s fall into temptation, we can learn from her mistake, repent and seek God’s forgiveness, and make more careful and Godly decisions. Let’s continually affirm our stand on God’s Word and strive not to follow Eve’s footsteps. We do this by making choices that prioritize our relationship with our Heavenly Father and uphold the standard of His Word. ■
