Larry and Renee met during orientation at their new job six years ago, and from that very first interaction, Larry felt an undeniable spark. There was something unique about Renee that drew him in, but he never found the courage to take the next step. They worked on the same floor, often crossing paths during breaks and lunches. Despite their chemistry, Larry hesitated, allowing self-doubt and fear of rejection to hold him back. Over the years, both had their share of relationships with others, but Renee occupied a special place in Larry’s heart—a secret he never revealed. When he learned that she had started seriously dating someone from work, it felt like a punch to the gut. Just six months later, they were engaged, and three months after that, they exchanged vows. Many would say that Larry missed his chance, trapped by his own fears and insecurities, while the opportunity to pursue something beautiful slipped right through his fingers.
Every day presents us with opportunities to step out in faith, yet how often do we find ourselves wrestling with the regret of missed chances? It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking we’re not good enough or that the timing isn’t right. But as Ephesians 5:16-17 (NLT) reminds us, “Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days. Don’t act thoughtlessly but understand what the Lord wants you to do.” This scripture conveys the importance of being intentional with the moments we’re given and recognizing when God has placed an opportunity right in front of us.
When those moments arise, God expects us to act, but sometimes fear and self-doubt hold us back. We worry about how we’ll look or what others might think. Yet, when we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus Christ and follow where he leads, those worries begin to fade.
Matthew 14:29-30 provides a vivid example of the struggle when our confidence in Christ isn’t quite where it needs to be. In this passage, when Peter steps out of the boat at Jesus’ invitation, Peter begins to walk on water. But as soon as he notices the wind, he starts to sink. This powerful moment serves as a reminder: as long as we focus on Christ, we can confidently step out in faith, unafraid of any risks. To do this, we must keep our eyes on him and increase our faith by learning more about who he is.
Opportunities often revolve around two themes: receiving a blessing or being a blessing. In Acts 20:35 (NLT), we are reminded, “You should remember the words of the Lord Jesus: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” So, we shouldn’t worry so much about what we’ll get back; God will take care of that. It’s the giving that positions us to be in the right place at the right time. Giving and pouring into the lives of others ignites a spirit of confidence that propels us into action. When we focus on giving, we shift our perspective from a mindset of scarcity to one of abundance, trusting that God will provide for us as we reach out to others.
It’s all about how we respond to life’s gifts and challenges. The Holy Spirit is there to guide us in knowing when and how to move. But we can’t walk around with our heads down, missing what’s right in front of us. Our Heavenly Father designed this earthly experience for us to walk in His light. So, we must look up, keep our focus on Him, and remain alert to the many opportunities He places in our everyday surroundings to be a blessing to others.
Colossians 3:1 (NLT) tells us, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand.” With our eyes set on the eternal, we can navigate our daily lives with purpose, ready to seize the moments that God orchestrates. Each day is a chance to be both a recipient and a conduit of His blessings, to act with intention as we back our faith, and to embrace the fullness of life God has in store for us.
So, look up, stay alert, and be ready always to be a blessing and to reach out and grab all the opportunities God has for you! Remember, these moments might be fleeting, but they can lead to lasting impacts, both in our lives and in the lives of those around us. Embrace each opportunity with faith and courage, knowing that God is at work through you. ■
