Confidence in God’s Goodness

When life hits us hard and we’re in the middle of a storm, some of us lose sight of God’s goodness. We see chaos in the world, we face struggles in our personal lives, and sometimes it feels like we’re battling spiritual attacks all alone. But here’s the truth: God’s goodness is unwavering, and we can find confidence in it no matter what we face. Psalm 27:13 (NLT) reminds us, “Yet I am confident I will see the Lord’s goodness while I am here in the land of the living.” God has provided this assurance to help us trust that even in the toughest times, He is working things out for our good.

Janice has been a believer for most of her life, and at 52, she believed she had a solid marriage, but everything changed when she discovered that her husband had been hiding a serious problem—he’s been a closet alcoholic. Now, facing significant health issues, the doctor has made it clear: if he wants to live, he must give up alcohol. Janice is overwhelmed. She’s never had to deal with a storm like this, and now, she’s struggling with pressure from every side—her husband’s anger and frustration, her own sense of betrayal, and the weight of caring for someone who has struggled in silence. It’s a heavy burden, and she finds herself questioning God’s goodness amidst this storm.

In moments of doubt, it’s easy to forget the promises God has for us. Psalm 100:5 (NLT) tells us, “For the Lord is good. His unfailing love continues forever, and his faithfulness continues to each generation.” This is a foundation we can stand on, and we must take God at His Word. Even when things get tough, like Janice’s situation, we can remind ourselves that God’s love and faithfulness never waver, regardless of our circumstances.

Have you ever found yourself in a place of doubt? Janice often asks why God is allowing her to go through this pain, especially during a time when she feels more vulnerable than she’s ever been. Maybe you’ve questioned whether God really cares about your situation. Well, 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT) says, “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” This is an incredible invitation from our Heavenly Father, who loves us more than we can imagine! God isn’t distant or indifferent; He invites us to bring our worries to Him. Just imagine the relief that washes over us when we realize we don’t have to carry these burdens alone.

This is where our faith must really kick in. When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to feel washed out and disconnected from hope. We can get so consumed by our problems that it seems like nothing can pull us out of that emotional heaviness, but the Holy Spirit dwells within; so underneath it all lies an unrelenting hope in Christ. Romans 5:5 (NLT) encourages us, “And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.” It’s about moving doubt out of the way and allowing ourselves to remember the truth: God is still good, and His plans for us are filled with hope.

Another powerful reminder of God’s goodness is found in Romans 8:28 (NLT): “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose.” Even when we can’t see how things will turn out, we can trust that God is weaving our lives into something beautiful. It might not happen in our timing, but He’s always working behind the scenes for our good. In the midst of our struggles, we can hold on to the assurance that God is always doing something wonderful for us, and He’s going to give us the victory. No matter how tangled things seem, He’s at work, guiding us toward a future filled with hope and purpose.

As we grow in our relationship with God, we learn to see His goodness in everyday moments. Psalm 34:8 (NLT) invites us, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” When we take the time to pause and reflect on the blessings in our lives, we’ll recognize how present and active God is, even in the midst of hardship.

When doubts creep in, let’s remind ourselves of God’s unfailing love and faithfulness. Every challenge and storm we face is opportunity to stand firm in the knowledge that God is good, and He will never let us down. His goodness isn’t just a comforting thought; it’s a powerful truth that can carry us through the darkest times and lead us to victory. ■
