Braced for Impact

If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, you’ve probably heard the phrase “brace for impact” from the flight attendants. It’s a serious warning that tells you everything you would need to know in order to prepare for a potential crash or rough landing. The intent is that, in moments of extreme turbulence, you will need to make yourself physically and mentally ready for whatever comes next. In everyday life, we face our own kind of “impact” moments. When storms hit us unexpectedly, they can leave us shaken, uncertain, and struggling to keep our balance.

While the phrase is often used in scary, life-threatening situations, spiritually, it has a lot to teach us. Just like we prepare for turbulence on a flight, we need to prepare ourselves spiritually for life’s storms before they hit. We can’t always control when the rain starts to pour or when the winds pick up, but we can make sure we’re grounded and strong in our faith. By strengthening our relationship with God before the storms come, we’ll be ready to face whatever life throws at us. As Jesus Christ reminds us in Matthew 7:24-25 (NLT), “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock.”

Even thinking about a potential plane crash can stir up feelings of fear and terror. Some people are so afraid of flying that they won’t even board a plane. But when it comes to life, God has fully equipped us with every spiritual blessing, and we have nothing to fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NLT) assures us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” God isn’t saying we won’t face turbulent times because life is full of trials, tribulations, and temptations. But He promises that no matter what we face, we are more than conquerors. If we hold on to His unchanging hands and never doubt His power and love, victory in Christ is ours. The storms may come, but with God on our side, we can stand firm knowing that He has equipped us to overcome.

Don’t let the enemy steal your excitement about life or convince you that you can’t have what God says you can have. Keep your faith in Him strong and unwavering. Hebrews 13:5 (NLT) reminds us, “Don’t love money; be satisfied with what you have. For God has said, ‘I will never fail you. I will never abandon you.’” God has a perfect track record of always coming to our rescue, and He’s never late. We can have peace and comfort in the truth that we serve a God who understands our discomfort and the tough seasons we go through.

Every challenge we face is an opportunity to experience His grace, love, and power in deeper ways. Even in the moments of discomfort, God is working behind the scenes, preparing us for what lies ahead. It’s through those tough times that He refines us, strengthening our character and deepening our trust in Him. He won’t fail us. Remember, without those growing pains and some level of discomfort, we won’t be ready for the new season God has prepared for us. The process of transformation may not always feel easy, but it’s necessary for the breakthrough our Heavenly Father has in store. He’s shaping us for something greater, and His faithfulness remains constant through every step. As we hold on to His promises and obey His Word, we can rest assured that even when the road ahead seems challenging, He will make sure we reach our destination. ■
