Confusion and A Lack of Faith

I’ve noticed something interesting in conversations with people who haven’t accepted Jesus Christ. Many of them, like a friend I spoke to recently, claim that they don’t have faith in God because they “just don’t get it.” They say they’re confused by all the different things they’ve heard about Him, with some people saying He’s a loving God and others talking about how He punishes people. There’s so much hate and suffering in the world, and they’re wondering why, if God is all powerful, why doesn’t He make the world a place of peace? Instead everything is chaotic and crazy. It’s true that even some believers have had similar thoughts, but what it all boils down to is this: many people have been taught false things about God and His Word, and many of them are not motivated to know the truth.

Proverbs 4:7 (NKJV) gives us the right attitude about consistently pursuing God’s Word and our responsibility to strive to obtain an understanding about the scriptures ourselves. It says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore get wisdom. And in all your getting, get understanding.” It’s common for people to say that their reason for not coming to faith in Christ is because they just don’t understand God or His Word. But the reality is that when people truly want something, they’ll do whatever it takes to pursue it. We always go after what we desire, and we should desire to know our Creator and have Him in our lives.

Confusion is a tool the enemy uses to keep both believers and non-believers stuck. Counting on people’s apathy and lack of motivation is one of his tactics. The good news is that God’s Word is the ultimate answer to confusion. We only need to read it for ourselves and trust in our Heavenly Father’s promises and wisdom. As 1 Corinthians 14:33 (NLT) reminds us, “For God is not a God of disorder but of peace, as in all the meetings of God’s holy people.” God’s nature is to bring peace and understanding, not confusion.

Confusion is defined as a state of uncertainty or a lack of clarity. It’s when someone struggles to understand something and can’t distinguish between different ideas. Being confused can disconnect us from opportunities, but spiritually, the harm it causes is even more significant. In Hosea 4:6 (NLT), God says, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.” When we’re confused about God and the salvation He offers through Jesus Christ, it can lead to destruction in our lives. A lack of knowledge keeps us from the truth that can set us free.

God emphasizes this through the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 12:1 (NKJV): “Now, concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant.” This reminds us that understanding God’s ways, His gifts, and His plans for us is essential. He doesn’t want us in the dark about His goodness and what He has made available to us through Jesus Christ. Our job is to seek Him out, and not let confusion stop us from growing closer to Him.

James 1:5 (NLT) tells us, “If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and he will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking.” One of the ways we can find clarity is by asking God directly for understanding. In Jeremiah 33:3 (NLT), the Lord says, “Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.” This is a promise that extends to all who seek God’s guidance and wisdom. It lets us know that He is willing to reveal deep and hidden knowledge to those who ask. The key word here is “ask.” Often, people don’t understand God because they’re not actively seeking Him. If you don’t look for something, you won’t find it. And when God is out of sight and out of mind, it’s easy for confusion to creep in. The enemy works through that absence, trying to create a false image of who God really is.

We read in Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT), “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” It’s important to remember that we don’t have to understand everything. We won’t always have all the answers, and that’s okay. Faith is about trusting God even when things don’t make sense. If we keep our eyes on Him and seek Him with all our hearts, He will clear up the confusion.

The world has big problems, but for all who will love, honor, and trust Him with their whole hearts and minds, God will forever be our problem solver. There is nothing He can’t handle.  When we lean on His guidance, He will bring clarity to our confusion and straighten us right on out. So, the next time confusion tries to keep you from God, remember that you don’t have to have it all figured out, but you must humble yourself before God, recognizing that He desires you to know Him. Trust that He will lead you, ask for understanding, and know that His ways are far better than anything we could imagine. ■
