Colossians 2:10 (NLT)
“So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.”
When a relationship falls apart, the pain can really make us question who we are. It can be deeply challenging to remember that our worth isn’t tied to what someone else thinks of us. The gap between knowing we’re complete in Jesus and truly believing it can feel huge, especially if we’ve spent years believing the lie that our value comes from someone else’s love or approval. In those moments of heartache, it’s easy to forget that we’re already whole in Christ, and his love is what gives us life. He’s the only one who can fill up our emptiness and give us the love and affirmation we need.
There are things about ourselves that we don’t truly understand until we go through life’s hiccups. These are the tough times that knock us for a loop, like the heartbreak of losing a man you thought you’d build a future with. There’s no doubt that this can be devastating, but as Christian women, heartbreak also brings a very important lesson. It reminds us of the importance of not allowing ourselves to get so wrapped up in someone else that we lose sight of God’s purpose and direction for our lives. While the pain can feel overwhelming, it’s also an opportunity to reset and remember that our worth and direction come from God, not from anyone else’s love or approval.
During the pain of a broken heart, we might find ourselves feeling angry. We expected God to shield us from the incredible emotional pain we may be experiencing. James 1:20 (NLT) says: “Human anger does not produce the righteousness God desires.” If we looked under the hood of every disappointment, disaster, and devastation, we would not see the hand of God but the free-will of men and women who would not be guided by Him. God doesn’t overstep anyone’s free-will. He wants us to be treated well by everyone, but we know all too well that everyone will not be obedient to His Will.
Our Heavenly Father doesn’t cause situations that bring us pain, and He never promised a life free of pain, but He did promise to be with us through it all, teaching us, helping us to grow in Christ, and showing us how precious we are to Him. In Isaiah 41:10 (NLT), He reassures us, “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” This promise reminds us that, no matter the struggles or heartache we face, God is right there beside us, offering strength, support, and comfort.
God is willing and able to heal our broken hearts, and our participation in His process is necessary. He doesn’t force healing upon us, but gently invites us to come to Him with our pain. Matthew 11:28-29 (NLT) gives us the comforting and powerful Words of our Master Jesus: “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” Jesus doesn’t force healing on us; he invites us to come to him with our burdens, to learn from him, and to trust him to lighten our load.
In Psalm 34:18 (NLT), it says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed.” God meets us in our brokenness, but we also have to choose to trust Him with our hurts, surrendering them to Him so He can bring healing. It’s a partnership—God’s power and our willingness to allow Him to work in our hearts. As we take part in this process, He gently leads us into healing and peace. In our deepest pain, God’s love doesn’t change. It remains constant, and His promise to restore us is sure. When we invite Him into our brokenness, we discover that His grace is enough, and His presence is all we truly need. ■
