Proverbs 19:2-3 (NLT)
“2 Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes. 3 People ruin their lives by their own foolishness and then are angry at the LORD.”
God commands us to renew our minds, and this is one of the most impactful and essential exercises for anyone committed to living a life of abundance. Ephesians 4:23 (NKJV) instructs us, “and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,” and this means that we must change the way we think. In order to embrace this, we have to examine our old or existing mindset and compare it to the mindset God calls us to adopt. This is extremely crucial because, depending on the way we currently think, we either open the door to God’s blessings or keep it tightly shut.
As God’s children, He commands us to put on the mind of Christ. This is a mind that does not doubt the power of God, is fully persuaded in His promises, and is always obedient to Him. The question is always about how closely we have renewed our minds according to this standard. The answer can be found by taking a closer look at where we stand today in our attitude, feelings, and thoughts. These are the truest indicators of the state of our minds. Looking at our lives this moment with blatant honesty also points to the level of faith we’re currently exercising.
None of us can rise above the amount of Word we know and believe. It’s a truth we can’t bypass, no matter how hard we try; it is unyielding. We can only live the Word we understand and accept in our hearts. As Romans 10:17 (NLT) says, “So faith comes from hearing, that is, hearing the Good News about Christ.” So, when it comes to walking by faith in the area of marriage, we can be confident that the state of our minds is the greatest factor.
The discipline of true faith is not a surface-level reality. Trust and belief in God’s promises must be anchored deep within our hearts. How do we get to this level of depth? Jesus Christ answers this question very simply in John 8:32 (NLT): “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Believing a lie or half-truth will not place us in the proximity of the fulfillment of the promise. We must be encouraged by the truth and position ourselves to hear it continually. And then, when the truth has saturated our hearts and minds, we must maintain that saturation by continually pouring God’s Word into our beings, allowing it to permeate every crevice of our existences.
Many of us aren’t doing this. We are allowing too much outside interference, and this is hindering the renewing of our minds. It’s possible that our current posture is revealing that more is needed to be as deeply entrenched in God’s truth as He desires us to be. We may be overly eager to find a Godly partner, and apprehensive that this need will not be met. God’s plan is never to withhold, but to provide what we need in His perfect timing.
In the spiritual realm, there are many doors, and some of them lead to destruction. The desire for marriage is powerful, and this isn’t wrong; God has woven it within our hearts. However, rather than bringing us closer to Him, this desire has caused many single individuals to open the wrong doors. In their eagerness or loneliness, they’ve allowed the adversary to slip through, bringing confusion, heartache, and distraction into their lives. Crafty and deceitful, the enemy doesn’t have to barge in; sometimes we let him in by opening doors that should always be closed. The good news is that by keeping ourselves sharp in God’s Word, we have the power to prevent this from happening, and we should.
Jesus Christ said in Revelation 3:7-8 (NLT): “This is the message from the one who is holy and true, the one who has the key of David. What he opens, no one can close; and what he closes, no one can open.” Our Lord and Savior has opened the door to every blessing God has in store for our lives. Are we guarding our hearts and keeping this door open? We can be assured that being sold-out to God and His Word keeps this right and precious door eternally open to us. The diligence to renew our minds and saturate our hearts with His truth is the greatest privilege of life. When we are committed to it, His revelation and guidance will lead us to marriage and to the one He has ordained for our lives. ■
