The other day, a little boy I know, Mason, came to me crying. When I asked him what was wrong, he shared that he felt left out, watching all his friends play during recess while he had to finish a class assignment. Watching tears stream down his face, his simple words cut deep into my heart. The feeling of being on the outside, of being overlooked, was something I totally understood. Even though it was in a different form, it was a pain I had experienced myself. As I comforted him, I couldn’t help but be reminded of the reality of all that it means to walk this Christian journey. At times, we can feel very lonely, like God has placed us in a bubble. During these moments, we must remind ourselves that we are never abandoned, and even our loneliness can be purposeful to the plan our Heavenly Father has for our lives.
Our minds can really do a number on us when we’re in a place of wanting companionship but there seems to be no opportunity for it around us. During these moments, it’s easy to feel like you’re in a bubble and can’t get out. It might seem as though you’re the only one experiencing that deep sting of loneliness, but that’s just not the truth. The Bible gives us some solid reassurance for times like this. In Isaiah 41:10 (NLT), God reminds us: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.” Even in our loneliest moments, we’re never truly alone. God is with us, extending His unending comfort and strength.
I can picture Mason sitting at a table, all alone, watching the others laugh and play. This is the reality of Christian life at times. It’s the raw truth about living a Godly lifestyle. There are times when it can feel painfully lonely, but in those moments, it’s also a chance for us to grow deeper in our relationship with God. Whether we trust it or not, this is how this season is meant to be spent. As James 4:8 (NLT) tells us, “Come close to God, and God will come close to you.” He doesn’t want us to be lonely; He wants us to be committed to love Him deeply and draw close to Him. It’s the strength of our intimacy with God that allows us to love others the way He loves us.
It’s in the bubble that God spiritually prepares and teaches us some of the most valuable lessons. One of those lessons is that we can’t conform to the ways of the world and be like everyone else. Romans 12:2 (NLT) says “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” We’re God’s children, set apart for His purpose. This means that we have to make sacrifices in order to become who He’s created us to be.
Another crucial lesson is that not everyone is meant to have access to our lives. Even if we’re naturally outgoing, we must learn to exercise discernment about who we let in and be guided by the Holy Spirit who indwells us. God will bring the right people into our lives—those who will encourage, challenge, and uplift us, helping us stay on the path He’s called us to walk.
When we spend time with God and really build our relationship with Him, that feeling of loneliness just fades away. It’s like when Mason was feeling left out—sometimes we feel isolated or like we don’t fit in. But when we start drawing closer to God, He fills us up in a way that nothing else can. Mason’s hurt feelings are a reminder that we all go through times of loneliness or feeling overlooked, but that’s when God steps in to teach us and fill those empty spaces. It’s not a quick fix; building this kind of confidence in our Heavenly Father takes time.
As we move forward in Christ, we will look back and cherish the time we spend in the “bubble” with God. We’ll see it as a time of tremendous reflection and, most importantly, spiritual growth. If we remain committed to growing in Christ, God will erase that path to loneliness and replace it with His peace. He will show us that we don’t need to rely on the world to feel validated. In His love, we find the security we need. Because of our devotion to Him, we will stand firm, knowing that He has given us everything we need to always be enough as we seek His Will and purpose every day.■
