God Has a Better Plan

In 2 Samuel 11:3 (NLT), we learn, “She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.” Like many of us, Bathsheba likely had her own vision for how her life would unfold. Like her, all of us probably have a picture in our minds of how we want our lives to be, to feel, and to look. Bathsheba, for instance, played a significant role as the wife of Uriah, a soldier who fought bravely on the front lines of battle as part of Israel’s army. Bathsheba later became the queen and wife of King David, and the mother of King Solomon. But, when we look at her story, it’s clear that her life didn’t follow the peaceful narrative she may have imagined. She probably dreamed of a quiet life of worship and raising a family with Uriah, but David’s actions plucked her out of the life she knew. Bathsheba couldn’t have known the outcome of her circumstances, but God’s plan for her life was still bigger and more glorious than she could have imagined, even through the pain and loss she faced.

While Bathsheba didn’t plan to become King David’s wife, God’s plan made her an ancestor of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She had consequences to face within her life, like all of us, but God’s grace was continually upon her. Bathsheba is just one of the many women in the Word that we can glean knowledge about the ways in which God blesses His daughters’. She married a king, and then mothers the next king. We should ask ourselves what lessons we can take from her story. What plans do you have right now – what kind of husband and family do you envision?

Psalm 16:2 (NLT) says, “I said to the Lord, “You are my Master! Every good thing I have comes from you.”  Most of us don’t wake up in the morning with a clear plan of what we’re going to do to greatly impact God’s Kingdom. We’re stuck in the same routine—we get up, get ready for work, have breakfast, then spend eight hours at the job, only to go home and prepare to do the same thing the next day. Hey, we all have to be about that grind to support ourselves and our loved ones, but you can see how a mindset of sameness can lock us into a cycle. Communing with God is a blessing too incredible for words, but how many of us really see it that way. How much of God do we experience throughout our day, week or month?

How much of ourselves do we surrender to the will and plan of God? We live in such a time where nothing about our circumstances can be left to chance—whimsical living is not how we should approach life. God expects us to be very intentional and consistent by walking in humility, so that at any given time we’re able to hear clearly from Him. Ephesians 1:11(NLT) tells us, “Furthermore, because we are united with Christ, we have received an inheritance from God, for he chose us in advance, and he makes everything work out according to his plan.” God has predestined us, long before we were born. It was His plan to save us, care for us, and be faithful to us an eternity. He doesn’t leave anything to chance when it comes to His children. This is why we can have confidence that His plan includes the person that we will partner with in marriage.

It’s easy to let routines dictate the course of our lives, but we can’t walk by faith that way, and God certainly doesn’t want a mindset of routine to enter into our worship of Him. Let’s not do that. Instead, recognize that, no matter what you’ve been through, God has a better plan for your life. Give Him something to work with. Set your mind and heart on being excited about walking with Him every day. Have a tender heart that’s flexible to the Will of God, and trust that He is leading you on a path that is filled with blessings.■
