Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT)
“Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.”
The other day, I overheard my coworker say something that stopped me in my tracks. She said, “You can mess with me about a lot of things, but don’t mess with my car or my money.” And let me tell you, she didn’t just say it casually but put some serious attitude on it. She said it with a level of conviction and authority that left no room for doubt. To put it out there so brazenly, it was just one of those statements that, for a moment, you had no other choice but to pause. And it wasn’t so much what she said but how she said it. The boldness in her words revealed a lot about her—about her priorities and what’s in her heart. She let everyone know, under no uncertain terms, what she values. She openly declared where her treasure lies.
Some might have shrugged it off as a casual comment, but you can best believe that heaven was paying attention to her words. It’s as if she unwittingly declared her allegiance, not just to the people around her, but to the universe itself. It got me thinking about how we, too, reveal where our heart truly is—not just through the things we say, but through the choices we make every day. Where we invest our time, our money, and our energy speaks volumes about what we hold most dear.
What we say—and even more so, what we do—reveals what’s truly rooted deep in our hearts. It’s easy to speak words, but the real test is whether our actions reflect those words. There’s no faking it with God. He sees beyond the surface. He’s all-knowing, all-powerful, and everywhere present. He knew every word we’d speak and every action we’d take long before we were born. With our Heavenly Father, there are no secrets about the contents of our hearts. He makes it very clear in Jeremiah 17:10 (NLT): “But I, the Lord, search all hearts and examine secret motives. I give all people their due rewards, according to what their actions deserve.” This straightens us right on out, because the Lord not only sees what we do; He knows why we do it.
When our heart’s desire is to please God, our words and actions are going to fall in line with His Will. It’s not about just speaking the right things; it’s about having a heart transformation that is going to show up in every area of our lives. Jesus Christ said in Luke 6:45 (NLT): “A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.” When your heart is right with the Lord and your desire is to please Him, there are certain things you’re just not going to say. If our hearts are filled with love, kindness, and a desire to follow our Heavenly Father, that’s what will flow out of us. But if our hearts are filled with bitterness, selfishness, or pride, our words will reveal it. That’s what will spill over into our actions, attitudes, and behavior. It’s a reminder that the state of our heart matters more than we often realize; Proverbs 4:23 makes it clear to us that everything flows from the heart.
You can always tell how someone truly feels when they get angry. The words spoken from an angry heart reveal what’s rooted in it. We put on a good show when we’re calm, and nothing has triggered our weaknesses or vulnerabilities. But when we’ve been touched in a place that kicks our negative emotions into high gear, all the gunk that’s in our hearts comes to the surface and it shows its ugly face through our words and even our actions.
There’s no doubt about it, because our Lord and Savior said it: words reveal what’s in your heart. Proverbs 18:21 cosigns this by confirming that death and life are in the power of the tongue. The statement my coworker made was during a moment of anger and frustration. In that heated moment, what was really deep within her heart came rushing to the surface—her treasures, the things she values most, had been threatened. We must be ever so careful about the words that flow from our mouths. When things are stressful and tight, the true condition of our hearts can be revealed. What we truly treasure, what we truly value, comes bursting through when we’re pushed to our limits. That’s why it’s so important to do a check-up and get brutally honest with ourselves. Examine whether your heart is aligned with God’s Will.
Psalms 44:21 (NLT) tells us, “God would surely have known it, for he knows the secrets of every heart.” No matter how hard we try to hide or deny things, God knows us completely—He knows the treasures of our hearts. If we have any doubts about whether we are treasuring Him and His righteousness above all else, we need to pray and ask Him to reveal the truth. If our heart is to please and honor God, He will most certainly tell us when our hearts are harboring the wrong things. He will also help us to release those things so that His love has greater room to heal, restore, and guide us as we journey higher in Christ. ■
