Ecclesiastes 11:4-5(NLT) tells us, “Farmers who wait for perfect weather never plant. If they watch every cloud, they never harvest. 5 Just as you cannot understand the path of the wind or the mystery of a tiny baby growing in its mother’s womb, so you cannot understand the activity of God, who does all things.”
I can relate to this farmers’ dilemma because I was raised on a farm. My grandfather, who lived just down the road from us, was a farmer himself. And let me tell you, waiting for perfect weather as a farmer is like asking for money with holes in your pocket—it’s never going to profit you. It’s just not a wise move. You can’t wait for everything to be “just right” because if you do, you’ll never take action, and without action, there’s no result.
Society constantly shows us that life is full of uncertainties. As Christians, we should automatically know that God is all we have, and He’s the only One we can trust. Ecclesiastes 11:4-5 teaches us this truth. If the farmer waited for perfect conditions, he would never plant, and without planting, there would be no harvest. And no harvest is never the outcome we want. Single Christians probably know this better than most. Just like the farmer has to step out in faith, trusting in God’s timing, we too must trust God with our actions, even when circumstances don’t seem perfect.
Our Heavenly Father often uses the example of the farmer to prove to us that, just like a farmer, we’re here on this earth to produce for His Kingdom—this is our purpose. Jesus Christ said in John 15:5, 8 (NLT): “5 Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. 8 When you produce much fruit, you are my true disciples. This brings great glory to my Father.” The union of marriage is one of the greatest ways we both harvest and produce, and Jesus makes it very clear in these verses that it’s not going to meet God’s standard and we’re separated from our blessed Savior. We can’t produce outside of him, and sadly, this is what a lot of singles are trying to do.
Just as a branch cannot bear fruit unless it remains attached to the vine, we cannot live a truly fruitful life without abiding in Christ. Bearing fruit is the result of a transformed life. It’s a life that reflects Christ’s character and fulfills God’s purpose. It’s the evidence that our relationship with God through Jesus Christ is strong. Bearing fruit is the mark of a true disciple.
Matthew 9:38 (NLT) tells us, “So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields.” Our responsibility is to plant good seeds, and not to worry about the harvest. God takes care of that. He knows exactly how to bless us, when to bless us, and what to bless us with. When it comes to marriage, the right heart posture is one of surrender. It’s aligning our expectations according to God’s Will and what He wants to give us. We must recognize that He is the Giver of all blessings, and never try to get ahead of Him. When our faith is firmly anchored in Him, and we are as committed to bear fruit as we should be, we can be confident that the end result will glorify God and bring true fulfillment to our lives. ■
