God’s Plans Are Not Altered by Our Emotions

Psalm 13:1-2 (NLT)
O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever? How long will you look the other way? How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul, with sorrow in my heart every day? How long will my enemy have the upper hand?”

There are moments in our life that may seem like God has taken a break from us. Complete silence – no response or even a sign that He has heard your prayers. I spoke to a good friend recently who was confused because she’s been praying for a long time, and in her eyes, her situation hasn’t changed. If we’re completely honest with ourselves, we’d admit that most of us have had a tinge of upsetness about prayers that seem to take longer to be answered than we expected. That frustration can turn into confusion very easily. We think we’re doing all the things we’re supposed do and have no clue about what else is required. And when God appears to us to be silent through all this, we may let ourselves sink deeper into emotional distress.

While it may not be the easiest thing to hear, God’s plans are not altered by our emotional states. They were put into place long before we were even thought about, and because He is perfect and good in every way, there is never a need for Him to change any aspect of His perfect Will As Isaiah 55:8-9 (NLT) reminds us, “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” God’s plans and purposes transcend our understanding, and even in moments of uncertainty or emotional turmoil, we are called to trust that His Will is perfect and unwavering.

Our Heavenly Father loves us more than we can fathom, and He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, into the earth to secure our futures. Jesus tells us in John 10:10 (NKJV), “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” Our Lord and Savior is fully transparent, informing us that the enemy seeks to harm and take away, but he came to offer us a life that is filled with God’s purpose, peace, and abundance. This is a life where we’re supposed to thrive and flourish and being convinced of God’s promises and trusting Him wholeheartedly ensures that we live to the fullest each day.

It’s natural that we might get frustrated during the journey towards marriage, but the truth is that it is indeed a journey, with a start and an end. Along the way, we are refined and prepared for the relationship God has designed for us, and it does take time. Just as with any journey, there may be moments of uncertainty or impatience, but we can trust that God’s timing is perfect. We have to remember that just because we don’t hear from Him when we think we should, it doesn’t mean He’s not with us or that He hasn’t worked everything out for our good. These are the times we need to press into Him even more. It’s the time when we have to lean into His love, and His strength and take notice of His grace. Every step, whether fast or slow, is a part of His plan. It will lead us to a future that aligns with His Will and purpose. And the truth is that when we finally arrive at the place we’ve been praying about—we’ll be so very thankful that we waited on God and didn’t get ahead of His timing.

God’s plans don’t shift based on our emotions, and honestly, we wouldn’t want them to. His plan for our lives is flawless because they are crafted with His wisdom, love, and our ultimate good in mind. Our feelings rise and fall, and we can get ourselves into a head space where it seems nothing can move us out of it. But we need to understand that this doesn’t move us forward; faith does. So, our time is so much better spent confessing and believing God’s promises. Proverbs 19:21 (NLT) reminds us, “You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail.” This verse makes it clear that instead of trying to fit His plans into our emotions, we need to trust Him and stand on His faithfulness. His ways are higher than ours, and in the end, His plans will always lead us to a life that’s full and rooted in His love and grace.■
