Exodus 16:16-18 (NLT)
“16 These are the Lord’s instructions: Each household should gather as much as it needs. Pick up two quarts for each person in your tent.”17 So the people of Israel did as they were told. Some gathered a lot, some only a little. 18 But when they measured it out, everyone had just enough. Those who gathered a lot had nothing left over, and those who gathered only a little had enough. Each family had just what it needed.”
As a single Christian desiring marriage, the weight of loneliness and impatience can cause our level of enthusiasm in the faith to diminish, especially when it seems like others around you are moving forward in their relationships. It can feel as though God has forgotten about us, but He never does. His promises never fail, and His timing is forever and always perfect. It’s very important to remember because our Heavenly Father wants the truth of His love and power to be deeply anchored in our hearts. Hebrews 11:6 (NLT) tells us, “And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.” Faith is extremely important to our relationship with God. Not only must it be reflected in our actions when things are going well, but it should be our foundation when things get tough.
God has given us emotions so that we can relate to one another and, most importantly, commune and fellowship with Him. However, emotions were never meant to tell the whole story about our identity and standing in Christ. They are not stable enough to hold our futures together or base our choices and decisions on. Emotions are fleeting; we can feel like we’re on top of the world one day and be distraught and disappointed the next. Most of us allow them to dictate how we approach our days and how we’ll feel any given moment, but when faith is at the helm, it’s a different story.
Hebrews 6:18-19 (NLT) says, “Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us. This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary.” Faith that is fully engaged causes us to speak differently. Our thoughts change to reflect the positives of God’s promises. Our actions transform into continual good deeds, and we actively lay up treasures in heaven. We become more aware of what we do, how we think, and what we say, because we realize that everything we put out there either aligns us with the Will of God and draws us closer to the blessings we seek, or it moves us further away from the kind of life God wants us to live.
This hope mentioned in Hebrews 6:18-19 should cause us to remain faithful to God’s promise above all else. It’s a steadfast and secure hope rooted in the unchanging nature of God and His promises. When hope is truly in God, it is not fleeting; but a “trustworthy anchor for our souls.” This means that we never give up but instead trust Him no matter how things look. It’s a hope that stabilizes us through life’s storms and goes beyond the here and now. God has already secured our futures; He’s not making it up as time goes along. We’re His children, and He has prepared a place for us in this life and the next, where we continually bask in His presence. So, the hope we have in Christ is rock solid.
Numbers 23:19(NLT) tells us, “God is not a man, so he does not lie. He is not human, so he does not change his mind.” We human beings vacillate, running cold one day and hot the next, depending on the circumstances, but God doesn’t do this. Life is full of ups and downs, but the good news is that His truth doesn’t change. It’s steady, reliable, and eternal, and we can rest knowing that what He has promised will always come to pass, no matter what storms we might be going through.
When God led the children of Israel through the wilderness, He showed His faithfulness in amazing ways. One of the most powerful examples was how He provided manna from heaven. In Exodus 16:4 (NLT), God tells Moses, “Look, I am going to rain down food from heaven for you.” He made sure the Israelites had what the needed to survive and be nourished, and we can be assured that just as He took care of their needs, He’ll do the same for ours. He provided this miraculous food every single day for 40 years. They didn’t have to worry about where their next meal was coming from. God took care of them, even in the middle of a barren wilderness.
We have to know that this wasn’t just about physical food. It was a deep reminder of God’s constant care and provision for His people. In the same way that He provided for the Israelites’ physical needs, He also nourishes us spiritually. Through His Word, His presence, and His promises, He feeds our hearts and souls. We desperately need it. We need it so that our faith will grow, and we can have confidence that the life we want—the one with a loving partner, He’ll make it happen. He will not leave us lacking, because He is a God who never changes, and He always keeps His promises.■
