Psalms 34:8 (NLT) tells us, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!”
This is the kind of verse that every single woman should want to hang on to. When it comes down to meeting someone and trying to discern if they’re relationship material for the partnership you want, you need to remember that God is the overseer of all things. You can take refuge in Him and His wisdom and not lean on your own.
What does it mean to take refuge? It means you rely on God for your safety, well-being, and covering from anyone or anything sent to be harmful to you. As believers, we never want to speak unkind words about anyone. That’s not a heart attitude that pleases God. However, we are called to be knowledgeable of the truth. And the truth is that there are people that are sent by the enemy to disrupt our faith and keep us from walking the path of our purpose. In 2 Corinthians 12:7 (NLT), the Apostle Paul referred to a person like this as a thorn in his flesh: “So to keep me from becoming proud, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger from Satan to torment me and keep me from becoming proud.” It’s a sad reality of living in this world: people can be used by the enemy to plot against our spiritual well-being.
Is this avoidable? Of course it is, and in Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT), our Heavenly Father reveals the strategy: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Leaning on God is the way to go in every situation in life. Sometimes, our desire for partnership can make us very gullible and susceptible to make connections with those God did not send to us. This is why it is critical to seek God’s direction before we invest our time, energy, and emotions into someone.
Just because a person says the right things or even claims to be a believer doesn’t mean they were sent by God. The enemy knows how to disguise harmful intentions behind charming words and appealing appearances. Titus 1:10 (NLT) warns, “For there are many rebellious people who engage in useless talk and deceive others.” The deception of the enemy is deployed by people he uses. Cloaking harmful plots and intentions behind flattering and charming words is his attempt to make us melt like butter, causing us to compromise our stand on the Word. We must be careful not to be fooled by lip service and appearances. Everything that looks good is not good for us.
Taking refuge in God means we have full confidence and trust that He knows what’s good and in our best interest. It means that we don’t dive right in just because someone looks the part and is saying all the right things. Instead, we pause—chill out—and take some time to get quiet with God and pray. We take the time to make sure we know what we’re working with before we even think about making any kind of serious investment. Taking refuge in the Father also means that we allow the Holy Spirit to check our hearts and keep us in check as well. He’ll expose those red flags we so often miss, and He’ll confirm whether a person or opportunity is truly from our Heavenly Father. We’re susceptible to mess-ups when we rush ahead of God’s timing. Ignoring His leading can open the door to spiritual attacks, heartbreak, or distractions that delay the blessings God has prepared for us.
We can walk in confidence and peace when we let the Lord be our covering, knowing He’s protecting us from the stuff we can’t see. Isaiah 30:21 (NLT) says, “Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, ‘This is the way you should go,’ whether to the right or to the left.” Our God is all-powerful and all-knowing. He is the only One who can keep our feet from falling. He guides us toward what He has promised, and all we have to do is remain pliable to His Will so we can hear His voice. God doesn’t just want us to survive relationships—He wants us to thrive in the ones He ordains. The safest place to be is in His Will, and the wisest thing we can do is trust Him with our heart .■
