Dear Heavenly Father,
Jesus Christ instructed us in Matthew 6:6(MSG), “Here’s what I want you to do: Find a quiet, secluded place so you won’t be tempted to role-play before God. Just be there as simply and honestly as you can manage. The focus will shift from you to God, and you will begin to sense his grace.” Things seem to be moving at such a fast pace in life, and modern technology is advancing so quickly that we have begun to want things on the double. We are moving further away from the virtue of patience and this displeases You. Jesus Christ told us what You require. You want quality time with us.
This makes perfect sense, because a relationship requires that two individuals spend time with one another, so they can get to know each other better. If we do this with the special person in our lives, we can do no less with You. Jesus Christ commands us in Matthew 6:33 to seek Your Kingdom and Your righteousness first. You must be our first priority, and we must spend time with You before we spend time with any other person.
Communication is a two-way street. It requires both that we speak and listen. Listening is the more important of the two, because what we have to say to You cannot equal the importance of what You will say to us. Your Words are life to our souls.
We make a mistake when we try to control how You move in our lives. Jesus said the focus must shift away from ourselves and on to You. We must throw our expectations out of the window and allow You to have Your way. You are always in control and know exactly what needs to be done in our hearts and minds. You tell us in Psalm 46:10 to be still and know that You are God. In Psalm 37:7, You commanded “Be still in the presence of the Lord, and wait patiently for him to act. Don’t worry about evil people who prosper or fret about their wicked schemes.” Sometimes, we need to quiet our minds and just softly call on the name of Jesus Christ. It’s not all the time that we have to sing and shout in thunderous praise. There’s a time and a place for this, but there are also times that we must quiet our souls. We must empty them of all thoughts and emotions; and concentrate only on You.
You tell us in James 4:8 to draw close to You, and You will draw close to us. Drawing close to You requires our reverence and awe of Your total holiness and majesty. It is a quiet blessedness. When we quiet our minds, we need to quiet our mouths and quiet our hearts as well. We must shut down all fleshly thoughts, because spending quality time with You is not about what we want and need. It’s about loving You in those moments. “Jesus, Jesus, Jesus” is all we should be saying and thinking in our quiet time with You.
Thank You for wanting to spend quality time with us, Heavenly Father. It is the greatest privilege of our lives. To know that You desire a relationship with us is more than we deserve. Please help us to walk worthy of the high calling of Jesus Christ. Thank You for our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, and thank You for the Holy Spirit. Let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
