Dear Heavenly Father,
There are two things that I hear frequently from some of my brothers and sisters in Christ. The first is “I can’t hear God!” or said another way, “God isn’t speaking to me?” This implies that You are not communicating with them, and that can’t be true. You speak to us every moment of each day. You speak through our circumstances, and most clearly, You speak to us through Your Word and through the Holy Spirit that indwells us. Relationships require communication, and this communication isn’t one-sided. Your Word made it very plain that we exist for the express purpose of having a relationship with You. We’re Your children, and You’re our Source of all things, our Heavenly Father. 1John 5:14 says we can be confident that when we ask for anything according to Your Will, You hear us.
Sometimes, Heavenly Father, there’s too much wax in our spiritual ears. It’s blocking us from hearing—perceiving and receiving—Your instruction, direction, and wisdom. This wax can be the music we listen to, the videos or shows we watch, the bad choices we make or the conversations we might be entertaining. If that stuff is unGodly, it’s wax that is clogging up our spiritual ears, and doing it so much that we can’t discern or hear Your voice.
To hear better doesn’t mean “God needs to speak to me more.” It means that we need to clean our ears and put a stop to the unGodly stuff we’re letting in. The Bible says that we must protect our eye and ear gates, because if we don’t, we’ll have a wax build-up that leads to critical issues in life.
The other thing I hear a lot from others is “I need more of God!” It sounds very pious, but its misleading and doesn’t convey the truth of what You’ve provided through Christ. Colossians 2:10 (NLT) says, “So you also are complete through your union with Christ, who is the head over every ruler and authority.” Through Your only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, You have made us complete. We lack nothing because of what You’ve accomplished through him. Through Christ, You have given us the best that can be received in all of time and eternity. You never need to do a do-over or a back-track, because You are perfect in every way. When You filled us with the fullness of Christ, it was a done deal. Our responsibility is to walk in the fullness of what You’ve already provided.
We have to be more aware of what we say and think, and we must take responsibility for it. Forgive us please, Dear Heavenly Father, for not walking in the bounty of what You’ve provided, and for not renewing our minds adequately through Your Word. We are what You say we are, we have what You say we have, and we can be what You say we can be. Thank You for our wholeness in Christ. Please help us to walk in it greater. Show us the things that are blocking us from hearing You as clearly as we should, and please guide us to lay down these things, so that we can continue to press towards the mark of the prize of Your high calling in Jesus Christ.
Thank You for our Blessed Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ, and thank You for the Holy Spirit. Let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
