The Good Work He’s Planned for Us

Ephesians 2:10(NLT)
“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

Years ago, I met an older woman with whom I forged a great friendship; she was like a grandmother to me. She was outside cutting her grass when I met her the firs time, and it was on one of the hottest and most humid days of the year. I happened to be driving home from work, looking forward to hopping from my car to my air-conditioned home. Driving past her, I was struck to see a woman of her age laboring in that kind of heat. An impulse took over. I turned my car around and pulled up next to her house. I introduced myself and asked if she would allow me to finish mowing her lawn. At first, she looked at me like I had two heads. She couldn’t believe a complete stranger would even suggest such a thing. I insisted and wouldn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I ended up cutting her grass on the spot, in my knee length skirt and the pumps I had worn to work.

We became very close. For almost four years, I would stop by her home at least once a week, until she became sick and passed away. She had been a master seamstress by trade and made everything from curtains to coats. Her signature embroidered label was the final touch on just about everything she constructed. I was blessed to receive one of her meticulously tailored coats, made of ginger-colored wool; I still have it till this day. Whenever I look in my closet, I think of the love she put into making it, and it reminds me of the verse in Ephesians 2:10.

This verse affirms we are God’s masterpiece! He took extreme pleasure in creating us, and He made us from what He is. We are His children—His family, and like Jesus Christ, we are purposed to do the good works that God planned ago. He predestined us for His purpose long before we actually arrived on the scene. And just as the love, care, and detail my friend put in the coat she gave me still lingers, we are to do the same through God’s love by investing it in the lives of others. The coat will one day fall apart and turn to dust, but the love of God we extend to people will leave an everlasting imprint within the earth.

Heavenly Father knows everything there is to know about us. He has seen to it that His purposes are implanted in our DNA. This means there will be things occurring in our environments that call out to us in the name of destiny. One of these occurrences called out to me on that summer day. God summoned me to help a woman, much like my grandmother, who needed a kindness.

Words cannot express how deeply grateful I am to Heavenly Father that I didn’t miss His voice that day. We express the Father’s love in our relationships with others, and many of us take this for granted. Jesus Christ said in John 10:27 that his sheep hear his voice; he knows us, and we follow him. To follow him is to mirror his example of investing and pouring into the lives of others. There isn’t a day that goes by that God isn’t delivering a Word to our spirits about our purpose. He tells us about the people we should pray for and help. Romans 8:14 says that all who are led by the Spirit of God are His children. He’s the one who leads! He directs our paths, and He is always telling us to do good. Let’s be sure to heed His call.
