Psalms 34:8(NLT) tells us, “Taste and see that the Lord is good. Oh, the joys of those who take refuge in him!” The psalmist, King David, wrote these beautiful words at a time when his life was filled with peril. It’s easy to imagine someone praising God when circumstances are good, but it takes it to a whole other level when conditions are as rough as David endured. He was constantly on the run because Saul was trying to kill him. After a while, he got tired of running and his faith was beginning to sink. We have nothing like the challenges David endured, but many of us feel very much like life is a constant race. And in the same way that David did, some of us are wondering whether we can continue to keep pace.
During his tough times, David thought the Philistines might offer a bit of refuge, but he soon found out the hard way that they were no friends of his. He also came to his senses and realized that while he was really going through, God had never left him alone. It was at one of his most trying times that he understood he should never have wavered in his faith. Many will attest that when we’re starving, a good meal is the most delicious and filling to us. In the same way, it is when we are at our most perilous moment that we truly and deeply realize the goodness of God. It is at this place of conviction in David’s mind and heart that he invites us to taste the goodness of the Lord, because it never sours or faints.
In our own lives, when trials and tribulations weigh heavily on us, and we have nowhere to turn, we seek the face of God like never before. His love, grace and mercy assure us that He can be found. We can hear tremendous teaching and preaching, but when your back is against the wall, you discover that no one can tell you what it means to really trust in Him, it’s something you have to experience for yourself. And it is also important to know that trials, troubles, and tribulations do not discriminate. From the most seasoned veteran to newly born-again Christians, all will face difficulty, and it is our trust in the Lord that will cause all of us to triumph when defeat seems inevitable. It is forged from developing intimacy in our relationship with Heavenly Father through the Lord Jesus Christ.
Sometimes our tribulations are made more difficult because we hold too tightly to things, situations, or relationships; and this isn’t giving us room to spiritually grow. It is preventing us from seeing a brighter future for ourselves. Whenever this occurs, it is a sure indication of how much we need to let God’s love and light loosen our grip, so that we can surrender to God whatever we are clutching too tightly. The weighty problems of your life can easily slow you to a halt when you are too afraid to let go. Continuing to hold on will hurt us. We’ve got to trust God and let it all fall to the ground.
The Apostle Paul said in Philippians 3:13-14(NLT), “13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I have not achieved it, but I focus on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.” We must press on in Christ, because this is the goal, and a prize is waiting for us. It isn’t easy to let go, and the race of life can seem too much at times, but God is with us. He will not leave or forsake us! As we continue to trust in Him, He will see us through.■
