Dear Heavenly Father,
As I think about what I’ve witnessed in my significant relationships, as well as those of some of my friends, we often make assumptions that ultimately cause us heartbreak. We don’t give ourselves time to find out if the person we’re attracted to is someone You’ve presented as a destiny partner. Instead, we jump in quickly and begin to invest ourselves emotionally. It’s as though some of us are waiting for the chance to abandon the care of our own souls by getting lost and consumed in a relationship. Your Word teaches us that this isn’t the right approach to walking in love.
In Romans 12:1, You tell us to give our entire beings to You because of all that You’ve done for us. We are to let our bodies be a temple, a living and holy sacrifice that You will find acceptable. Furthermore, Jesus Christ commands us in Mark 12:30 to love You with all our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. He then tells us in John 4:24 that the way to do this is to worship You in Spirit and in truth. We can’t bring a lie before You and expect it to be okay. If our hearts are consumed with a person, so much so that we will allow this person to cause us to sin, then we are not trusting Your love as fully as we should.
All it takes is one person to cause us to get totally off track with what You’ve called us to do. Then, every aspect of our lives goes bonkers because we’ve gone completely off the rails in our relationship with You. There’s nothing wrong with growing ‘in like’ with someone and to love them with the love of Christ, but we can’t allow bonds with human-beings to come between our bond with You.
It isn’t possible for another human-being to take care of our spirit. Only You can do this for us as we walk in the example of the Lord Jesus Christ. As we grow stronger in the Holy Spirit, we are then prepared with the strength to overcome some of the problems and challenges that come with marriage. It’s a mistake to rush into relationships without hearing from You and without giving ourselves time to grow in spiritual maturity.
Dear, Heavenly Father, as single people, help us to see this. Help us to honor You with our best. In Proverbs 3:9(NLT), You tell us, “Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the best part of everything you produce.” Heavenly Father, You want the BEST part because You deserve the BEST part. The attitude of a mind that is renewed is to always give You the best, for You alone deserve it. Please help us to honor our commitment to please You and not attempt to give You leftovers, for they are unacceptable to You. Teach and help us to give You our best.
Please forgive us for not honoring You and Your throne the way we should. Forgive us for our carelessness and the lack of love that we’ve demonstrated. We desire to be better and humbly seek Your forgiveness.
Thank You for our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and for the gift of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Please let Your Will be done on earth as it is in heaven. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ. Amen.
