Stumbling in the Dark

Over the summer, we had a pretty bad tropical storm that rolled through my area. It knocked down trees, power lines, and most of our state was without power for several days, almost a week. My family and I were blessed, because we were without power for only two days; it was challenging to say the least. No internet connection or Wi-Fi made me see how much we rely on its modern convenience, and not being able to cook and prepare meals was horrible, but the most difficult part for me was the darkness in the house at night. Not being able to flip a light switch and actually see my way around was the worst. I found myself stumbling around the house, bumping into furniture, trying to remember where I put the flashlight last.

As I remember this, I can’t help but think what it’s like for people that are without the love of Christ in their lives. It’s right there for them, but they will not reach for it. 2Corinthians 4:4(NLT) says, “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.” When our Heavenly Father created human beings, He did so with a family in mind. This is His heart. We were made in His image, and by becoming born-again of God’s Spirit, through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, we become God’s children. Being fathered is a big part of our nature, and many people will ignore this very important truth. Instead of following God through Jesus Christ, they blindly follow darkness.

Two days in the dark was enough for me, but even though it was completely dark all around my house, the hearts of everyone in my home are filled with the light of Christ. That is and will always be something to celebrate with thankfulness to God. Our call as His children is to have the compassion of Jesus Christ. We must remember where we were before we came to Christ. We were stumbling in the dark, but God rescued us. Ephesians 5:8(NLT) tells us, “For once you were full of darkness, but now you have light from the Lord. So live as people of light!”

For those of us who now live in the light and know the comfort and peace of being covered in God’s love, we must pray that others will hear the Good News about Jesus Christ and will come to him as well. I watched a very popular celebrity on television once, and she very honestly expressed her desire for companionship. She talked about how much she missed being held and hearing the words “I love you.” She missed being told she’s beautiful. She said it felt like the lights were out in that part of her life.

After hearing her speak, I thought to myself, “If you think a human being can turn the lights on in your life like that, imagine what the love of our Lord and Savior will do for you.” The light that every person needs, is the light of Christ. The experience of being without basic amenities can be very overwhelming. Most of us have become spoiled and reliant on modern conveniences that make our lives comfortable, but make no mistake, we can’t make it without Jesus Christ. It is because of his love and sacrifice that we don’t have to stumble around in the dark. We can walk in his light, and we should make it our mission to do all we can to help others do the same.
