Proverbs 7:4-15(NLT)
“4 Love wisdom like a sister; make insight a beloved member of your family. 5 Let them protect you from an affair with an immoral woman, from listening to the flattery of a promiscuous woman. 6 While I was at the window of my house, looking through the curtain, 7 I saw some naive young men, and one in particular who lacked common sense. 8 He was crossing the street near the house of an immoral woman, strolling down the path by her house. 9 It was at twilight, in the evening, as deep darkness fell. 10 The woman approached him, seductively dressed and sly of heart. 11 She was the brash, rebellious type, never content to stay at home. 12 She is often in the streets and markets, soliciting at every corner. 13 She threw her arms around him and kissed him, and with a brazen look she said, 14 “I’ve just made my peace offerings and fulfilled my vows. 15 You’re the one I was looking for! I came out to find you, and here you are!”
In this passage of Proverbs 7:4-15, God is speaking to us through Solomon, the son of King David, and the wisest person that has ever lived. Our loving Heavenly Father is providing instruction and direction on how to avoid a trap that has been set by the adversary. God has given us these tremendous words of His wisdom so we can protect the blessings we treasure most. He wants us to learn to keep His Word deep in our hearts. No one has seen God, but we can still know Him through His Word, which He elevates even above His name. In His Word, He tells us about Himself, because He requires us to imitate His loving nature. He also warns that impulses and rushes to judgement and action can cause us to make devastating mistakes. We may end up paying for them for the rest of our lives, and this isn’t what our Heavenly Father wants.
Proverbs 4:7(NLT) states, “Getting wisdom is the wisest thing you can do! And whatever else you do, develop good judgment.” Not only should obtaining God’s wisdom be a top priority in our lives, but we should seek to understand how to use His wisdom so that we make good and sound decisions and choices. We can gain this understanding of how to live right and do the right things by consulting with God first and finding out what He has to say on the matters and issues we face.
Proverbs 7 talks about a foolish and impulsive man that gets tricked by an adulterous woman and has an affair. She’s married to someone else, but she lures this man in. Solomon discusses the importance of using good judgement and wisdom before things gets to a point of no return. He warned in Proverbs 7:25(NLT), “Don’t let your hearts stray away toward her. Don’t wander down her wayward path.” In other words, Solomon is warning us not to allow our emotions to govern our decisions and not to allow ourselves to be enticed by how good things look, because these can be traps.
God will help us steer clear of trouble and stay on the path of His love if we follow His wisdom and always seek His guidance. The psalmist wrote in Psalm 119:103(NLT), “How sweet your words taste to me; they are sweeter than honey.” God knows best! He’s our Creator and our Heavenly Father. God’s Word is our everything. It’s a feast that allows us to live a more than abundant life! It’s the very foundation upon which our lives are built. Knowing God’s Word helps us to live a Godly life that is pleasing to Heavenly Father. This is why it is such an unfathomable treasure, and we must treat it as such.
I am not a big fan of surprises. I love knowing what God expects of me, and I like to know what’s coming around the corner, but God’s Word is all the assurance we need. We don’t have to know all the details about the future, we just need to trust what God says and lean on Him for direction. Then, life’s journey will have less bumps, and we will progress and receive God’s rewards as we move forward in Christ.
The man that lacked wisdom and commonsense fell into a trap that the adversary set up for him. It’s likely that he didn’t study God’s Word because he wasn’t interested in God’s requirements. All the goodness that he could have looked forward to in his future was gobbled up by a woman that made destroying the lives of men a sport. This example in Proverbs 7 affirms what can happen when your focus is on the wrong thing and we’re not in tune to God’s voice. And in order to discern God’s voice, you have to know what His Word says, you have to read it and get it in your heart. Once we understand and know what God expects of us, we’ll be able to avoid the pitfalls the devil causes. Of course we will make mistakes, but we should never underestimate the reality that when we know God’s Word, we’ll do better, live better, and enjoy life.■
