Our Heavenly Father made all things in the earth available for us to enjoy, this is especially true for His children. It’s one of the reasons I love the Word so much, because everything that pertains to life and Godliness can be found in His Word, and His Word leads us to His treasures. As a single woman, you might think that since the Word of God doesn’t specifically mention the word ‘dating’ that His instructions might be MIA on the subject. Not so. While it’s true that dating is a modern practice, God doesn’t change, and humans don’t change all that much either. One could argue that we’ve become more selfish, impatient, and sinful, but we still desperately need God’s Word and love, and we can’t accomplish anything without Him. He created us to expand through His love, and the instructions and directions He’s given for this also applies when it comes to the person that will walk with us through life.
God commands us in Galatians 5:16(NLT), “Let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be doing what your sinful nature craves.” This gives us tremendous perspective. If we’re completely honest, we’d have to admit that many of us are craving companionship, and we may even be craving it in a physical sense. God created the intimacy that a man and woman share, so it is indeed a very beautiful thing, but it is only beautiful when it is done in the way He ordained.
We can be sure from Galatians 5:16 that Heavenly Father doesn’t want us to allow this craving for companionship and physical intimacy to take over and get the best of us. But the truth is that sometimes we do allow it take over, and that’s when there’s a potential to make huge mistakes. Romans 13:14(NLT) says, “Instead, clothe yourself with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ. And don’t let yourself think about ways to indulge your evil desires.” God is instructing us to let Him handle things by praying for the Spirit’s guidance and work within. You and I don’t have the strength on our own to fend off some of these cravings and temptations, but the Spirit within has all power, and if we ask, he will help us.
Craving a relationship is an issue many single Christian women face. It can be such a strong desire at times that, mentally and emotionally, we allow it to distort the reality of who we are in Christ. We think that we can’t be satisfied and fulfilled until we have what we want. God wants us to know the truth, and the truth is that He has made us complete in Christ, and no human being on earth can fulfill us or make us whole but the Lord Jesus. If we miss this, our faith isn’t where it should be, and this will set us back.
We should be craving a relationship with God through Jesus Christ more than any other relationship, thing, or person. 1Corinthians 3:16 tells us that our bodies are God’s temples and the Spirit of God lives in us. Romans 8:9 tells us that we must live by allowing the Holy Spirit to control us and not the flesh. When we make a practice of yielding to the Spirit, we can have confidence he will lead us safely, because he always does what pleases God. We’ll know we’re on the right track when our mind-set is one praying for God to keep us on the straight and narrow, and following His guidance as He does just that.
The Holy Spirit within is waiting on us to invite him to lead, guide and direct us, and to keep us on the path of God’s blessings. God has commanded us in Galatians 5:16 to do this, and when your heart is to please God and bless others, you’ll be amazed at what the Spirit does in your life. God knows our desires, and He will take care of every detail of blessing us with the right man. Our responsibility is to partner with what God is doing by walking in the Spirit and increasing in His love, then we’ll be ready for all that He has in store for us. ■
