Jesus Christ said in Matthew 5:13(NLT), “You are the salt of the earth. But what good is salt if it has lost its flavor? Can you make it salty again? It will be thrown out and trampled underfoot as worthless.” This is a verse of scripture that should make every believer in the Lord Jesus Christ smile from ear to ear. Our Master calls us the salt of the earth. This means that we, as God’s children of light, bring the flavor! The world would have us think exactly the opposite, but we shouldn’t allow what the world thinks to cancel our flavor. Followers of the Lord Jesus are equipped by him to have a good influence on the lives of others. Salt is a substance that seasons and preserves food. In like manner, this is what we ought to be doing. We are called by God to add wonderful flavor and to help preserve others through the love of Christ.
In Matthew 5:14(NLT), Jesus Christ said, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden.” This is awesome! As born-again believers, we have the Spirit of Christ abiding within. Because of this, we have a positive influence everywhere we go, but let’s not forget what Jesus said in the previous verse. If the salt loses its flavor, it’s stamped “INEFFECTIVE”. This can happen to us if we don’t employ the love of Christ in the powerful way that he desires.
Jesus said that it would be ridiculous to put a light under a basket. What good would that do? If it’s under a basket, it’s not illuminating the way for others. He tells us in Matthew 5:16(NLT), “In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.” This is extremely relevant today, because many Christians have in fact lost their flavor. Their lights are not burning bright, and in many cases, they’re not burning at all. This is because we have become sluggish regarding the things of God.
James 1:22(NLT) tells us, “But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves.” We have a responsibility to God to do all that we can in the earth for His Kingdom. Sometimes its as simple as a smile or an ‘hello’, and other times, it may be the encouragement we give to someone to help them continue to fight the good fight of faith. We are called to shine our lights even in small ways, but we also have other things that we should be doing for Christ as well. Galatians 5:25 tells us that since we live in the Spirit because of the accomplishment of Jesus Christ on the cross, we must also walk in the Spirit. We can’t be lazy about this. It’s too important.
Proverbs 13:4(NLT) says “Lazy people want much but get little, but those who work hard will prosper.” Some of us have been praying to God for a while now, and the blessing still eludes us. It hasn’t materialized, but it’s not because God is withholding the blessing. It’s because we’re seeking other things instead of seeking to please Him. We’re more interested in receiving the blessing than we are about fulfilling God’s purpose. We apply ourselves in so many other areas of life; dating, sports, entertainment, job training, recreational activities, etc.; but when it comes to being about our Heavenly Father’s business, many of us are not enthusiastic. We can change this, and we should.
Hebrews 11:6(NKJV) tells us, “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” This verse is something to be excited about. Our Heavenly Father rewards diligence. James 2:26 tells us that faith without works is dead. Dead faith will not yield the results we seek. Faith is required to please God, and faith must be backed up with the right action. We should be committed to walk in the Spirit and follow his guidance every day. We must move in Christ and allow our faith to be stretched beyond our comfort zones. So, let’s not ever be lazy regarding the things of God. Let’s tell others about Jesus Christ and be committed to God’s Will, plan, and purpose. He has empowered us to be movers and shakers for Christ, and this is exactly what we should be doing. ■
