For most of us, when we were children, we were carefree and approached life very innocently. It wasn’t until we matured a bit that we learned how to worry and be anxious about things. Of course, it didn’t help that the world can be a very unkind place. It taught us things like doubt, insecurity, competition, fear, and survival of the fittest. In 1Corinthians 13:11(ESV), the Apostle Paul said, “When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways.” Going from one grade to the next occupied the years of our youth, but as we matured and our responsibilities increased, we forgot about the joy, humility, and enthusiasm of our childhoods, and that’s not what Paul had in mind. Some of us didn’t pick up a fully matured faith in God. Instead, we swapped out our childish ways for routines and attitudes that can make adult-life drab and uneventful.
Drab and uneventful is not how God designed life to be. 1Corinthians 4:20(NLT) tells us, “For the Kingdom of God is not just a lot of talk; it is living by God’s power.” Living by God’s power is an incredible reality for the believer. It’s moving from faith to faith, trusting God greater with every triumph while we learn to walk by the Spirit and move by his guidance. It is critical in life that we yield to God and be led by Him through the indwelling Holy Spirit. We shouldn’t get locked into sameness day after day but do as God commands and grow in the example of Christ continually.
Life on earth is very dynamic. It is always changing and none of us have the power to slow it down. With everything that is going on in our world, it is not difficult to see that the pace of life has increased. If we are not staying humble and seeking the face of God for the strength, stamina, and confidence He gives us, we will not be able to keep up. This has happened to many believers. They were not able to keep pace, and because of this, they are living beneath their privilege. God will not force us to read and study His Word and to deepen our relationship with Him through His Holy Spirit. Life affords us the option of doing whatever we want to do whenever we choose to do it, but as children of the Most High God, we must understand that there is a better way to live and to approach life. It is to live a victoriously through Jesus Christ!
Because of what God accomplished through the ministry, sacrifice, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He has made His precious Holy Spirit available to us. Jesus told the disciples in John 16:7(NKJV), “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” The Holy Spirit is our Helper, and Jesus Christ made it very clear to the disciples that his going away and the return of the Holy Spirit to dwell within the body temples of God’s children was the great mystery of God’s plan. Again, that Christ would be in us through the Holy Spirit is the great mystery, and our Heavenly Father kept it a secret throughout the ages and preserved it until the life of Jesus Christ.
Our blessed Lord also taught us in John 16:13(NLT) that “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.” The Holy Spirit is the extraordinary promise of our wonderful Heavenly Father. The Spirit is God’s seed, and he, the Spirit, will lead and guide us to the truth, and he will tell us everything that Jesus Christ wants us to hear. So, it is never a question about whether God is speaking, the question is always about whether we are listening.
We desire our lives to be robust, fulfilling, and very meaningful, and many of us have been praying about the desires of our hearts. We might be disappointed because things are not progressing as we had hoped, but we must remember that we are partners with our Heavenly Father. We can’t sit back with our hands tucked beneath our laps. James 2:26(NLT) tells us, “Just as the body is dead without breath, so also faith is dead without good works.” Sometimes, we’re not doing the good works that position us to receive. We’re not fulfilling our obligation to the faith, and this hinders us. We must learn to move by God’s Spirit, so we can be obedient to the instruction of Jesus Christ.
In order to move by the Spirit, we have to learn to hear his voice so that we can go right when he says, “go right”, and go left when he says, “go left”. God communicates with us through His matchless Word, but He also speaks to us in a way that is so much more intimate than verbal communication. He lives in us, and He speaks to us Spirit to spirit. We must remember that we have a call to fulfill and a purpose according to God’s Will. We don’t always know all the details, but the Spirit knows everything there is to know. This earth experience is our opportunity to grow in Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit. So, we must come alive and stay alert. We must get into the habit of moving when the Spirit says move, so that we can be confident we’re pleasing God and living our lives for His glory. ■
