While most of us know how to approach God with our desires through prayer, waiting for His answers in His own time and way often proves to be a significant challenge. This waiting period, especially when it comes to something as profound as finding a marital partner, can truly test our patience. I’ve had numerous conversations with women about the struggle of waiting and praying for God to bless them with a marital partner. We all understand that the union between a man and woman was the first relationship He ordained between humans. One might assume these connections would naturally unfold, yet as singles, many of us are baffled by how long it takes to find the right person.
The encouragement of Galatians 6:9(NLT) reads, “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” Doing good according to the example of Christ is one of our purposes for being on this earth. And the greatest good that any of us can do is to grow in our relationship with God through our Master Jesus. It entails spending quality time with our Heavenly Father, prioritizing His presence, and being attentive to seeking and placing Him first in all we do. Our Heavenly Father is sovereign, and words like excellence, perfection, glorious, and brilliance fall short in describing His majesty. The truth of His being deserves our praise every moment of each day, so nothing in our thoughts or actions should ever attempt to demote Him from His rightful place of honor at the forefront of our lives.
Society has taught us many things, and one of them is the notion of fast and in a hurry; results on the double. Our Heavenly Father doesn’t operate on our timetable, and we can’t rush Him on anything. The truth is that sometimes, our spiritual immaturity and lack of preparation are why we don’t see things progressing as we’d like. Think of it like telling a twelve-year-old they can drive a car just because they feel ready, even though they’re not trained, equipped, or prepared to navigate the wheel safely. Any loving parent would set them straight real quick.
As believers, it’s God’s Word that sets us straight. Yet, many Christian women don’t dive into studying and living it out the way that God requires. We need to approach the desires of our hearts with God’s wisdom. He knows what’s best for us and knows when we’re ready to handle what we’ve asked for. Our Heavenly Father said in Isaiah 55:9(NLT): “For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” God’s knowledge is infinite, but ours isn’t. Sometimes, we lean on our limited understanding and even try to help God out, but truth is, He’s God all by Himself; He doesn’t need our assistance. All He asks is for us to be obedient to His Word.
When it’s our heart’s longing to have someone significant in our lives, it can be tough to be without them. Discouragement can kick in pretty strong at times because our reality is quite different than what we expected. In these moments, it’s vital to trust that God knows what’s best for us. He also knows when we’re spiritually mature enough to handle what we desire. If we sense even the slightest need to grow in faith, dedicating ourselves to delving deeper into His Word is what we need to demonstrate to our Heavenly Father.
In Ephesians 4:23, God tells us to be renewed in the spirit of our minds. This means that you and I must change the way we think according to what He says in His Word. When we do this, we will be transformed. God doesn’t need our help, but we desperately need His guidance. It’s not the physical change, but the inner changes—the internal shifts that align with the example of Christ, these are the kind that partner with His blessings and draw them into our lives. ■
