My Husband Is in God’s Hands

Most men I know would likely agree that respect is the most important quality in a wife. This consensus suggests that, for many men, respect is a fundamental aspect of a successful marriage. Mutual respect not only sets the stage for a lasting union but is also a truth that seems universally acknowledged. Given its apparent significance, I’m often surprised when I hear men emphasize this quality. This led me to wonder: Why is respect so crucial to them? Why does it hold such a prominent focus?

As we explore this question together, it’s helpful to start by considering the pain and hurt caused by disrespect. Both men and women are equally valued in the eyes of our Heavenly Father, who sees neither as less important than the other. However, it’s essential to acknowledge that men and women are created with distinct differences, and this diversity is part of God’s design. While we may encounter disrespect from strangers, coworkers, or even drivers in traffic and often brush it off without much thought, the impact of disrespect is profoundly different when it comes from someone who holds a special place in our hearts. When the person closest to us disrespects us, it affects us on a much deeper level.

1 Corinthians 10:24 (NLT) instructs us, “Don’t be concerned for your own good but for the good of others.” This principle should guide our actions and behaviors, especially within a relationship. By prioritizing the well-being of our spouse, we embody the selflessness that strengthens and enriches our union. On the other hand, if we’re not prioritizing this instruction from God, but instead becoming easily offended and vindictive with our words and actions, we risk causing irreparable harm to our relationships. None of us should want this.

Disrespect can be defined as a lack of regard or consideration for another person’s feelings, rights, or dignity. It often shows up in hurtful actions or words that put others down. The Bible offers clear guidance on how we should treat each other. For instance, Proverbs 12:18 (NLT) says, “Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing.” This shows us that harsh words can really hurt, while thoughtful ones can help heal. Also, Ephesians 4:29 (NLT) tells us, “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” This reminds us to use our words to build others up, not tear them down.

Sometimes, we might push the limits to see just how far the man in our lives will go to show his love for us. While there are positive ways to test and deepen our connection, it’s crucial to avoid doing so through unkindness or abuse. Testing boundaries in a way that involves punishment or harsh treatment is never the right approach. It’s important to recognize this behavior for what it is and actively choose a path of kindness and respect instead.

Many men are deeply sensitive to disrespect, and such wounds can ultimately diminish their respect for the women in their lives. We must remember that like us, our husbands are in God’s hands. He loves them as much as He loves us, and He doesn’t want any of us to be mistreated. God has provided guidance in His Word to help us maintain strong and loving relationships. By following this guidance, we honor His call for respect and kindness and strengthen the foundation of our unions. Our commitment to this principle can significantly impact how we secure and nurture our relationships. So, we must be ever mindful that treating each other with respect and kindness is not just a reflection of our love for one another but also a testament to our faith and commitment to our relationship with God. ■
