I Won’t Let Go Until the Blessing Comes

Are you afraid that you’ll never get married? Do you believe you’re not good enough, or have you allowed other fears and doubts to creep into your heart and mind? Recently, I watched a Christian woman begin to acquiesce to the possibility of never meeting someone who would want to marry her. She seemed resigned to the thought that maybe marriage just wasn’t in God’s plan for her life, or worse, that she wasn’t worthy of such a blessing. To see someone settle is heartbreaking, especially when they are capable of so much more. But less face it, when you’ve been single longer than you ever expected, these doubts can cloud your mind and steal your peace.

This feeling of resignation isn’t new. It’s something that many of us struggle with, whether in the area of relationships, career, or any other desire that seems delayed. But here’s something every believer must consider: the very thing you’re struggling with right now could be the very place where you encounter God in the most amazing way. It may be challenging to grasp, but God is preparing us for the desire of our hearts. He wants it more for us than we could ever possibly desire it for ourselves.

For instance, consider Jacob’s record in Genesis 32:24-32 (NLT). In this passage, he is facing a life-altering moment. Many say that Jacob wrestled with a man all night long, but in truth, this Man wrestled with him. When it comes to the desires of our hearts, wrestling is what many of us are doing. We’re wrestling with ourselves, trying to control our circumstances, fearing that releasing control means that our expectations will not be met. In Jacob’s case, Jesus is wrestling with him, exhausting the pride of Jacob’s self-reliance, leaving him to come to his senses and recognize God as his sufficiency and Source.

Jacob didn’t give up. Even as his strength faded; even as it went on all night, and even as the odds seemed impossible. He held on tightly, clinging to perseverance and endurance, and God responded with a life-changing blessing.

In the same way, when we face doubts and fears—whether about marriage or anything else—we are called to hold on to God’s promises with the same tenacity. Like Jacob, we must not give up when things are not turning out as we expected. Even when it feels like everything is against us, when we feel unworthy, or when we wonder if God’s timing will ever bring the breakthrough we’ve longed for, we are encouraged to keep pressing, keep asking, and keep knocking through prayer and faith. God honors our persistence and faith, and He doesn’t want us settling for less than His best.

Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV) reminds us, “Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us.” This verse speaks to the limitless power of God at work in our lives, a power that can accomplish far more than we can imagine. Grappling with doubts and desires, feeling sad and dejected, all of it can feel like an internal battle. That wrestling match between Jesus and Jacob in Genesis 32 hits home. Jacob was in a moment of deep struggle, but he knew that he was wrestling not just for his future, but for a divine blessing. He was resolved in his heart to not let go of God until the blessing came. His tenacity and unwavering faith in the midst of the battle are lessons for all of us.

If our emotions are getting the best of us, it’s a sure sign that all our energy is focused on ourselves. We can’t have faith and doubt at the same time; we need to pick one and choose who we’re going to be. We can find ourselves stuck in a cycle, wandering aimlessly in the wilderness of doubt, fear, or discouragement when we focus too much on the wrong things. We must snap out of it, cling to God’s promises, and turn ourselves around through hope and peace in Christ. There’s no other way to see this.

In Deuteronomy 2:3 (NLT), God speaks to the Israelites, saying, “You have been wandering around in this hill country long enough.” He goes on to remind them in verse 7: “For the Lord your God has blessed you in everything you have done. He has watched your every step through this great wilderness. During these forty years, the Lord your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing.” The Israelites had wandered in the wilderness for many years, and though their journey was long and difficult, God assured them that He was always present with them, providing for their needs. Despite the challenges, they lacked nothing because God’s faithfulness never wavered.

They wandered in the wilderness for forty long years because of their unbelief and disobedience. Despite our Heavenly Father’s constant provision and promises, they repeatedly doubted His faithfulness and rebelled against His plans. As a result, that generation was not allowed to enter the land flowing with milk and honey. It was their lack of trust in God that kept them from receiving the fulfillment of His promises. Let this never be said about us. Instead, we must remain steadfast and unmovable when it comes to having faith in God.

Just as God changed Jacob’s name and his destiny, He can change ours, too. The key is to not let go until the blessing comes, to keep trusting in God’s plan, and to know that He is faithful to finish the good work He has begun in us. He was with the Israelites through their wilderness experience, and He is with us in ours. No matter what you believe about yourself, you are enough. God is with you in everything you do, watching over you every step of the way. He is blessing you right now, where you are, and you lack nothing. You have everything you need within you to make a difference, overcome obstacles, and be victorious. Trust that God’s presence, provision, and strength are more than enough to carry you through. And one day, in His perfect timing, your heart’s desire will unfold in your life. ■
